- weitgehend selbst erarbeitete Analysen

Sehen Sie wieder mal hin.

Update für Dienstag, 22. März
Guten Abend
Happy trading & good hunting @ all

U.S. Feb. producer prices up 0.4%
Feb. core PPI rises 0.1% as expected
By Rex Nutting, MarketWatch
Last Update: 8:31 AM ET March 22, 2005
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - A surge in energy prices pushed the U.S. producer price index for finished goods up 0.4 percent in February, the Labor Department reported Tuesday.
Excluding big increases in food and energy prices, the core PPI increased a more moderate 0.1 percent, the agency said.
The headline figure was slightly larger than expected. Economists were forecasting, on average, a 0.3 percent gain in the PPI. The core PPI came in as expected, according to the survey conducted by MarketWatch.
The PPI had increased 0.3 percent in January, with the core PPI shooting up 0.8 percent, the largest increase in six years.
As a result, prices of goods ready for retail sales have climbed 4.7 percent in the past 12 months. The core PPI is up 2.8 percent in the past year, the fastest gain in more than nine years.
In February, inflationary pressures were also mounting further back in the production pipeline. Prices of intermediate goods destined for further processing increased 0.7 percent, while the core intermediate PPI climbed 0.5 percent.
However, some relief may be coming. Prices of crude materials fell 1.6 percent in February. Prices of basic industrial materials fell 3 percent, including a 12 percent drop in iron and steel scrap prices. Crude foodstuffs prices dropped 3.2 percent. Meanwhile, crude energy prices increased just 0.2 percent, despite the 3.3 percent rise in crude petroleum prices.
The inflation figures are likely to have little impact on Federal Reserve policymakers meeting in Washington.
Analysts are nearly unanimous in their belief that the Federal Open Market Committee will raise its federal funds target rate by a quarter percentage point to 2.75 percent, the seventh consecutive quarter-point hike. The announcement is expected at about 2:15 p.m. Eastern.
Fed officials have said inflation and inflationary expectations remain well contained. Despite large increases in energy and other commodity prices in response to heavy global demand, U.S. consumer prices have not accelerated out of control.
Intense competition, especially in labor markets, has kept inflation moderate.
In February, energy prices increased 1.4 percent, including a 5.2 percent rise in gasoline. Consumer food prices increased 0.8 percent, including the largest rise in egg prices in four years.
Finished capital equipment prices fell 0.2 percent. Prices of consumer durables fell 0.5 percent. Light motor truck prices.fell 2.8 percent, the largest drop in two years. Passenger car prices dipped 0.9 percent.

LONDON (MarketWatch) - U.S. stock futures were mainly steady Tuesday, gaining a little traction after February wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent - largely in line with expectations as energy prices surged.
Software and semiconductor stocks in the early spotlight after Oracle Corp. (ORCL: news, chart, profile) landed Retek, Inc. (RETK: news, chart, profile) and a couple of brokers supported the chip stocks.
Tobacco stocks were also in view after a court decision on Monday and amid a report in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that the Justice Department and cigarette makers have met secretly with a court-appointed mediator in an effort to settle the government`s civil fraud and racketeering lawsuit.
But overall, dealers expect markets to stay steady as investors await an anticipated quarter point hike to interest rates in the U.S., taking the Fed Funds to 2.75 percent. The decision is expected at 2:15 p.m. Eastern and the markets are looking for the accompanying statement to gauge the Fed`s mood.
Speculation has been building for "hawkish" comments, but not everyone expects a change. "Now is not the time for a significant departure in the way they have been communicating or what they have been communicating to the public," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at the PNC Financial Services Group. The S&P and Nasdaq futures remained mainly flat after the PPI data release, but the Dow industrials shook off a small decline. Cmponent General Motors (GM: news, chart, profile) continued to come under pressure, easing 2.3 percent in the pre-open to $29 amid a report in the Financial Times that GE on Monday withdrew from an agreement that allowed earlier payments to suppliers.
The Labor Department said that excluding big increases in food and energy prices, the core PPI increased 0.1 percent in February. Economists were forecasting a 0.3 percent gain in the PPI and 0.1 percent in the core.
Focus stocks
Altria Group (MO: news, chart, profile) was marked around $63.31 in Frankfurt trading of U.S. shares, a few cents up on the close. On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider whether to reduce $10.5 million in damages in a California case. U.K. tobacco stocks were posting moderate gains.
SAP (SAP: news, chart, profile) was flat in Germany after the software maker backed out of an auction for Retek (RETK: news, chart, profile) , leaving Oracle (ORCL: news, chart, profile) with an agreement at $11.25 a share. Retek closed Monday at $11.46 - shares dropped to $11.20 on Instinet. See story
Looking at the chip sector, German DRAM maker Infineon Technologies (IFX: news, chart, profile) was up 0.4 percent. Samsung Electronics overnight projected a rise in first quarter semiconductor sales, J.P. Morgan noted.
Homebuilder Lennar Corp. (LEN: news, chart, profile) early Tuesday raised its full-year profit outlook and now sees earnings of $7.15 per share, up from $6.90 previously.
Foods group General Mills (GIS: news, chart, profile) expects fiscal 2005, earnings excluding one-time items are expected to be $2.85 to $2.95 a share, surrounding analyst forecasts of $2.92 a share.
Alcoa (AA: news, chart, profile) , a Dow industrials stock, said it would lay off 2,000 employees over the next 12 months as part of a restructuring aimed at streamlining its operations in North America, Europe and South America. The aluminum company expects to record charges of $20 million to $25 million as a result, but believes the restructuring will lead to savings of $45 million a year
Shares in French pharmaceutical Sanofi-Aventis (SNY: news, chart, profile) rose 3 percent in Paris after J.P. Morgan analysts said in a note that the company, along with partner Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY: news, chart, profile) , has successfully defended its patent on anti-platelet drug Plavix in the Canadian Courts.
The board of Mattel Inc. (MAT: news, chart, profile) has moved to replenish the company`s stock-buyback authorization, increasing its repurchase program by $250 million.
Broker calls
Analysts brought down estimates for Electronic Arts (ERTS: news, chart, profile) the world`s largest videogame publisher late Monday warned sales and profit for the March year would be below its prior forecast due to weak sales in North America. See story
ERTS dropped 12.4 percent in the pre-open at $58.11 on Instinet.
The brokers remained guardedly supportive on the sector. "While the lack of hardware supply cuts across the industry, we believe it is a distant second to EA`s weak catalog sales as a driver of this result," Credit Suisse First Boston told clients. "That said we believe this event will create a solid buying opportunity for the entire group."
UBS lifted its price targets on a handful of analgog chipmaker stocks and upgraded its rating on National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM: news, chart, profile) to "buy" from "neutral." The broker said its recent checks from Texas Instruments (TXN: news, chart, profile) and NSM "indicate that bookings are improving. As the current inventory cycle nears completion, order trends should recover in calendar second quarter 2005 towards end market growth rates."
The broker lifted its price target on Linear Technology (LLTC: news, chart, profile) to $49 from a prior target at $38.56; Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM: news, chart, profile) to $53 from $41.79; Analog Devices (ADI: news, chart, profile) to $46 from $35.83 and TI to $33 from $25.44.
Motorola (MOT: news, chart, profile) was rising amid an upgrade from Banc of America to "buy" from "neutral" with shares last marked at $15.12.
Lehman Brothers told clients it believes sales in the fiscal second quarter for Analog Devices "are tracking to the high end of guidance." ADI said it expects sales to grow from 2 percent to 6 percent on the quarter. Lehman projects a sales increase of 4 percent to $604 million.
UBS also upgraded chipmaker Marvell Technology (MRVL: news, chart, profile) to "buy" from "neutral," saying evidence is building that the inventory correction accompanying the industry`s transition from recovery to growth is at or nearing its close.
Morgan Stanley upgraded German pharmaceutical giant Schering (SHR: news, chart, profile) to "overweight" from "equal-weight," citing the recent sell off in the shares. The broker told clients that the market is prematurely writing colorectal cancer drug PTK787 out of forecasts. On Monday Schering said it was delaying regulatory filings for the drug to early 2007.
Dutch bank ABN Amro said Tuesday that it has downgraded its rating on European equities to "neutral" from "overweight" over concern that a rise in U.S. interest rates could spark a gradual or forced sell-off in the market. "We think the time is right to take profits...our key concern is the shaky platform of U.S. dollar debt that many trading positions in the European market have been built on."

Text of Fed`s statement on rates

Last Update: 2:28 PM ET March 22, 2005
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Following is the statement that the Federal Open Market Committee released on Tuesday after deciding to raise its overnight lending target rate to 2.75 percent. See full story.
The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to raise its target for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 2 3/4 percent.
The committee believes that, even after this action, the stance of monetary policy remains accommodative and, coupled with robust underlying growth in productivity, is providing ongoing support to economic activity. Output evidently continues to grow at a solid pace despite the rise in energy prices, and labor market conditions continue to improve gradually. Though longer-term inflation expectations remain well contained, pressures on inflation have picked up in recent months and pricing power is more evident. The rise in energy prices, however, has not notably fed through to core consumer prices.
The committee perceives that, with appropriate monetary policy action, the upside and downside risks to the attainment of both sustainable growth and price stability should be kept roughly equal. With underlying inflation expected to be contained, the committee believes that policy accommodation can be removed at a pace that is likely to be measured. Nonetheless, the committee will respond to changes in economic prospects as needed to fulfill its obligation to maintain price stability.
Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Alan Greenspan, chairman; Timothy F. Geithner, vice chairman; Ben S. Bernanke; Susan S. Bies; Roger W. Ferguson, Jr.; Edward M. Gramlich; Jack Guynn; Donald L. Kohn; Michael H. Moskow; Mark W. Olson; Anthony M. Santomero; and Gary H. Stern.
In a related action, the board of governors unanimously approved a 25-basis-point increase in the discount rate to 3 3/4 percent. In taking this action, the board approved the requests submitted by the boards of directors of the Federal Reserve banks of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and San Francisco.

China Ölimporte steigen - Februar jedoch deutlich rückläufig
Peking 23.03.2005 (www.

Oracle`s fiscal Q3 net falls 15%
Non-GAAP profit slightly tops analysts` estimates
Ellison looks to dispel concerns
By Rex Crum, MarketWatch
Last Update: 6:46 PM ET March 22, 2005
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Oracle Corp. reported late Tuesday fiscal third-quarter net income fell 15 percent, even as sales rose, as the largest seller of database software had higher costs related to its $10.5 billion acquisition of smaller rival PeopleSoft.
For the three months ended Feb. 28, Oracle (ORCL: news, chart, profile) earned a profit of $540 million, or 10 cents a share, down from $635 million, or 12 cents, a year earlier.
Excluding $249 million in restructuring costs and other charges stemming from the PeopleSoft buyout, the company said it earned 16 cents a share.
On that basis, which doesn`t conform to generally accepted accounting principles, the company beat the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who forecast a profit of 15 cents a share.
Sales rose 18 percent to $2.95 billion. That figure excludes $143 million in software license and support revenue related that would have been record by PeopleSoft had it remained an independent company. With those sales included, Oracle`s revenue came to $3.09 billion, slightly topping analysts` estimates of $3.075 billion.
Amid slowing growth in its primary business of selling database software to large corporations, Chief Executive Larry Ellison has gone on an acquisition binge to jump-start sales.
After acquiring PeopleSoft to increase Oracle`s share of the business applications market, this week Ellison outbid German rival SAP AG (SAP: news, chart, profile) to acquire Retek Inc. (RETK: news, chart, profile) for $670 million, gaining software used to manage retail store operations.
Oracle said total software revenue rose 15 percent to $2.34 billion from a year ago, while new license sales of its key database products grew 12 percent to $782 million.
On a conference call to discuss the results, Ellison played down concerns that Oracle`s core database business was losing market share to IBM Corp. (IBM: news, chart, profile) and Microsoft (MSFT: news, chart, profile) .
Ellison said he expects Oracle to benefit from what he sees are two trends emerging in the database business: the expanding use of networks run by the Linux operating system, "where Microsoft does not offer a product," and an Oracle-backed push toward so-called grid computing, in which many database servers work together as a single, virtual computer.
Ellison highlighted information from research firm IDC, which said that over the past 12 months, Oracle grew its database market share to 41.3 percent from 40.3 percent, while IBM`s database share dropped to 30.6 percent from 31.8 percent.
Safra Catz, Oracle`s co-president and interim chief financial officer, said the company expects to complete integrating PeopleSoft`s operations within the next six months, and that total restructuring costs related to the merger will reach $611 million.
Oracle initially intended to take a break from making any major acquisitions while it integrates PeopleSoft, but SAP forced its hand by making a bid for Retek, a long-time Oracle partner, Ellison said.
"SAP announced (plans to) purchase Retek and we thought the retail industry was strategic for us and we had to respond." Ellison said. Oracle prefers to not do any major purchases in the current quarter, he added.
Going forward, Catz said Oracle expects to post a fourth-quarter net profit of between 17 cents and 18 cents a share, on revenue in a range of $3.66 billion to $3.79 billion.
Excluding one-time items, Catz said Oracle should earn between 22 cents and 24 cents a share on revenue between $3.84 billion and $3.97 billion. During the same period a year ago, Oracle earned 19 cents a share on $3.08 billion in revenue.
Analysts previously pegged Oracle`s fourth-quarter earnings at 22 cents a share on revenue of $3.87 billion.
In late trading after the report, Oracle shares fell 19 cents to $12.49.

Consumer prices churn higher
Feb. CPI up 0.4% on energy, housing, medical costs
By Rex Nutting, MarketWatch
Last Update: 8:45 AM ET March 23, 2005
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - U.S. inflation broke higher in February.
The U.S. consumer price index increased a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent, led by soaring energy costs and higher prices for housing, medical care and air fares, the Labor Department reported Wednesday.
Excluding food and energy prices, the core rate of inflation increased 0.3 percent in February.
The increases in the CPI and core CPI were each 0.1 percentage point stronger than expected by Wall Street economists surveyed by MarketWatch. See Economic Calendar.
The CPI is up 3 percent in the past year, while the core rate has risen 2.4 percent, the biggest gain since August 2002. Read the full report.
The figures, coming a day after the Federal Reserve warned of budding inflationary pressures, will likely depress both stock and bond markets on Wednesday. Stock futures fell and the yield on the 10-year Treasury spiked to 4.69 percent on the news. The yield on the 2-year note rose to a 3-year high. See Indications.
The Federal Open Market Committee said inflationary pressures could be contained only by "measured" increases in interest rates. The FOMC hiked the federal funds rate to 2.75 percent, and hinted that more, maybe many more, rate hikes are yet to come. See full story.
With the inflation rate at 0.4 percent and hourly pay and average workweek both unchanged, real weekly earnings fell 0.4 percent in February. Real earnings (adjusted for inflation) have fallen 0.8 percent in the past year.
Price increases were widespread in February. Only apparel and recreation prices bucked the upward trend.
Commodity prices increased 0.4 percent, while services prices increased 0.3 percent.
Energy prices rose 2 percent in February, as gasoline prices increased 3.2 percent. Natural gas prices climbed 2.5 percent and fuel oil prices increased 2.4 percent. Energy prices had fallen the two previous months, but are now up 10.4 percent in the past 12 months.
Food prices rose a moderate 0.1 percent in February.
Housing costs, which represent 40 percent of the CPI, increased 0.4 percent, the most since March 2003. A 1.1 percent increase in lodging away from home led the increase, likely a seasonal quirk due to the relatively late Super Bowl. Costs for homeownership and renting a home each increased 0.2 percent.
Medical care prices rose 0.6 percent, with 0.7 percent increases in hospital services and physician services.
Transportation costs increased 0.8 percent, largely the result of higher energy costs. Air fares gained 1.5 percent, the most since July 2003. Prices of new vehicles increased 0.1 percent.
Apparel and recreation prices each declined 0.2 percent.

"Although oil and gas prices are likely to remain robust in the short-term and the oilfield service sector may continue to take advantage of its pricing strength through increased capacity utilization, we believe...that the sector`s risk/reward tradeoff has turned negative from neutral," he said in a note to clients.
He downgraded 18 names, including Baker Hughes (BHI: news, chart, profile) , Noble Corp. (NE: news, chart, profile) , and Weatherford International (WFT: news, chart, profile) . All were trading lower in morning trading.

Mercedes drosselt Fertigung

Hinweis in eigener Sache:
Happy Easter & good trading @ all

Gasoline hits a record after Texas fire
By Lisa Sanders, MarketWatch
Last Update: 10:40 PM ET March 23, 2005
DALLAS (MarketWatch) -- Gasoline futures jumped to a record high in after-hours trading Wednesday after a blast at the nation`s third-largest refinery left at least 14 people dead and as many as 100 injured.
April gasoline traded at a record $1.608 a gallon, taking out the high of $1.603 a gallon set on Tuesday. The contract last stood at $1.6015 a gallon, up 1.7 percent, or 2.66 cents.
May crude stood at $54.31 a barrel, up 1 percent, or 50 cents. April heating oil rallied 1 percent, or 1.54 cents, to $1.549 a gallon.
An explosion rocked BP`s (BP: news, chart, profile) refinery in Texas City, Texas, at about 1:30 p.m. Central time, said Hugh Depland, a company spokesman. It is the largest refinery in BP`s system, with a throughput capacity of 433,000 barrels per day, and supplies 3 percent of the nation`s automotive gasoline.
A company spokesman said the explosion and fire occurred in, and was confined to, an isomerization unit. Isomerization units are used increase gasoline octane ratings and typically are located downstream from fluid catalytic crackers in the refining process.
"The news spread like wildfire across the trading floor near the end of the Nymex session ..." said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. "Preliminary reports indicate that it could knock out some high-octane production as well as diesel."
Ahead of that news, the May contract closed under $54 for the first time in almost two weeks after the Energy Department and the American Petroleum Institute reported larger-than-expected increases in crude supplies.
The Energy Department said crude supplies rose by 4.1 million barrels for the week ended March 18. Total gasoline inventories dropped by 4.1 million barrels last week, and distillate fuel inventories fell by 2.8 million barrels.
The API said crude supplies rose by 8.8 million barrels, but gasoline and distillate inventories both fell by 4.7 million barrels.
May crude closed down 4 percent, or $2.22, at $53.81 a barrel.
Analysts expected the Energy Department to report a much smaller build in crude supplies for the week ended March 18. Expectations for gasoline were mixed, and most expected to see another decline in distillate inventories.
The Energy Department also reported that refinery utilization dropped 0.5 percent from the previous week. Both gasoline and distillate fuel production dropped slightly from the week before.
"Obviously, the high price of oil is encouraging strong imports to the U.S.," said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Alaron.com. "But refiners, who were producing at a record rate through February and into March, are slowing down for maintenance. That is taking a toll on the products side because we`re still seeing strong demand."
The nation`s average gasoline price at the pump has been setting records in the past two weeks and is expected to climb even higher, according to a survey released Sunday. See full story.
According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the United States is $2.106, up from $2.095 a gallon Tuesday.
April heating oil lost 1.3 cents to close at $1.5336 a gallon.
Meanwhile, natural gas shed 11 cents to close at $7.138 per million British thermal units. It was last up 4.2 cents at $7.18.
Kyle Cooper, an energy analyst at Citigroup, expects the Energy Department to report a natural-gas storage decline similar to the 95 billion cubic feet reported last week. Last year, the drawdown in gas inventories was 65 billion cubic feet.
Oil-service stocks took the lead among decliners in energy stocks, and the Philadelphia Oil Service Index (OSX: news, chart, profile) closed at 134.61 points, down 3.2 percent. See Energy Stocks.

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Dow industrials futures rose Thursday after component General Electric raised its earnings outlook for the first quarter by close to 3 percent.
Weaker-than-expected economic data also supported the futures, with the market shifting toward an inflation watch. New orders for durable goods increased a smaller-than-expected 0.3 percent in February following a revised 1.1 percent decline in January, the Commerce Department.
GE (GE: news, chart, profile) cited the offering 80.5 million Genworth Financial (GNW: news, chart, profile) shares for the raised outlook, as well as "solid growth" in the conglomerate`s end markets.

GE affirmed its outlook for full year earnings growth.
Earlier, the futures were holding higher, supported in part by expectations for some traditional end-of-the-month buying by institutions, dealers in London concluded.
