Japanese Broadband Company Softbank Posts Larger Quarterly Loss on Promotional Costs
TOKYO (AP) -- Losses at Japanese broadband company Softbank Corp. ballooned for the quarter ended March 31 to 27 billion yen (US$256 million; euro200 million), as advertising and other promotional costs battered earnings, the Internet provider said Tuesday.

The Tokyo-based Net and telecommunications service company had posted a group net loss of 13.41 billion yen for the quarter a year earlier.
Group sales at Softbank, which has a stake in Yahoo! Japan and hundreds of other Internet-related companies, soared to 275 billion yen (US$2.6 billion; euro2 billion) during the three months from 155 billion yen the previous year because of its acquisition of fixed-line telephone company Japan Telecom Co.
Earlier this year, it purchased the Japan unit of British telecom company Cable & Wireless PLC.
Softbank President Masayoshi Son said his company will get into the black this fiscal year ending March 2006, as its fixed-line telephone business starts to turn a profit.
Softbank, which also recently bought out a struggling baseball team, is strengthening its Internet content services, including online games, commerce, spots and music and publishing, Son said at a news conference broadcast live on its Web page. The security service business for the Net is also doing well, he said.
The acquisition of Japan Telecom has enabled Softbank to join the top ranks of the nation`s telecom industry, although it is facing a tough battle against former government monopoly Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., the top telecom.
Son on Tuesday reiterated hopes of moving into the mobile-phone business, although he has run into bureaucratic red tape and has been unable to get government approval for setting up shop.
He said his company was strengthening entertainment and other content businesses, and such sectors are already turning a profit.
"Compared to companies that only offer infrastructure, our company is clearly different," he said.
Softbank runs the biggest broadband service in Japan, called Yahoo! BB, which has drawn 4.77 million users, and Son is targeting 6.5 million people linking to the Net through Yahoo! BB and Softbank`s other services by September this year.
For the fiscal year ended March 31, Softbank`s losses improved to 59.9 billion yen (US$567 million; euro442 million) from a 107 billion yen loss. Sales jumped 62 percent for the year to 837 billion yen (US$7.9 billion; euro6 billion) from 517 billion yen the previous year.
Softbank has been spending heavily to promote Japan Telecom`s new fixed-line telephone services, aggressively offering lower prices. That`s similar to its strategy in the early days of Yahoo! BB, when Softbank handed out free modems on the streets, sending it into deep losses for years.
