GENICOM and Sabre Announce Five-year Agreement to Provide New Ticket Printers for Travel Agents
CHANTILLY, Va., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- GENICOM Corporation (Nasdaq: GECM - news) and Sabre Holding Corporation (NYSE: TSG - news) today announced a new five-year agreement to produce the ATB1500mrp printer-a new generation of faster, affordable, easier-to-use printer for airline tickets and itineraries.

GENICOM has worked closely with Sabre for more than 12 years to satisfy the company`s unique printer requirements. As a result of this relationship, new technologies have been pioneered by these companies, including:

An advanced data compression technique that uses look-up tables to print faster and more efficiently by minimizing communications costs
Thermal airline ticket printing, which makes printing more convenient and efficient by eliminating or reducing ribbons and/or toner
``GENICOM and Sabre have had a long, successful relationship because we share the same vision to bring `best of breed` products at competitive price points to our customers to improve their productivity and their bottom lines,`` said Aubrey Brickhouse, vice president and general manager of GENICOM`s Travel Industry Products Group. ``The new Sabre requirements were highly challenging, which enabled GENICOM to maintain and extend our leadership position in developing ATB printers.``

Designed to meet the specific requirements of Sabre`s high-volume customers, the ATB1500mrp printer is faster than the ATB high-end printers Sabre customers currently use, but costs nearly half as much-a significant advantage for travel agents at a time when shrinking commissions drive the need for cost-cutting reductions.

To increase travel consultant productivity, GENICOM and Sabre engineers designed a more user-friendly control panel, and simplified the menu structure and item selection process. The ATB1500mrp printer comes pre-programmed with the four configuration settings used by Sabre connected travel consultants, eliminating the need for laborious parameter settings required by older printers. Once the printer is installed, changing settings is easy thanks to the Sabre system`s simplified set-up program. In addition, the ATB1500mrp also has a simplified paper path to improve overall reliability.

``Our approach in this project was to push for a new level of performance over existing printers,`` said Bob Schmidt, director of technology planning for Sabre. ``At the same time, we wanted to develop a number of unique product features that would differentiate the Sabre offering for our users. GENICOM`s flexibility and modular printer design allowed us to achieve all these goals.``

The ATB1500 can handle the U.S.-style thermal coupon stock, while the availability of options will also enable the printer to be configured to handle European-style plain paper stock, including magnetics and/or stock control number read capabilities. Also, GENICOM has loaded all of the Sabre system`s international formats into the International model to cover all worldwide Sabre ATB printing applications.

The U.S. version of the Sabre ATB1500 printer is available immediately nationwide through the Sabre sales organization. The International version is scheduled for release during the second quarter of 2000.
