Norilsk Buys Another Nugget

Norilsk Nickel said Wednesday that it had acquired control of the large Siberian Lenzoloto gold firm as part of a strategy to become one of the world`s largest producers of the metal.
"We have acquired a superb asset," Norilsk deputy chief executive Maxim Finsky told a news briefing."With a company producing around 10 tons of gold [a year] and with reserves of 200 tons, our total annual production will rise to 40 tons and we will become one of the 10 largest producers in the world."
An unknown bidder called Prospekt earlier on Wednesday won an auction for a 44.9 percent stake in Lenzoloto, paying 4.67 billion rubles ($152 million) for it. The starting price was set at 1.065 billion rubles.
"The price was too high for us," Finsky said immediately after the auction, denying he was familiar with the Prospekt. But later he said that the mystery winner was in fact a company acting for Norilsk.
"The acquisition of this asset is so important that we could not admit to buying it on the spot," Finsky told the briefing, explaining his earlier statement. He said with the acquisition of the stake Norilsk gained control of 65.9 percent of Lenzoloto`s voting shares. Norilsk last month acquired a controlling stake in another gold mining company, Matrosov Mine.

Das ist neben Polyus und Matrosow nun schon die dritte große Mine, die sich Norilsk unter den Nagel gerissen hat. Ich habe zwar auch ein kleines Päckchen von GMKN (eher wegen Stillwater und der Platinproduktion), - aber den Russen trau ich irgenwie nicht so recht über den Weg.
Naja, der Kurs klettert mit der Angst ...

Norilsk Nickel Plans To Mine 40 Tonnes Of Gold In 2004

Norilsk Nickel owns the Polyus Mining Company, from the Krasnoyarsk territory, and a number of other major gold mining assets in Russia.
Prokhorov said it was looking at two other gold projects in Krasnoyarsk, besides its existing Olimpiada mine.
"In addition, there are other potentially viable properties that are not yet even being considered for auction," Prokhorov said.
Norilsk Nickel sold 33 tonnes of gold in 2002. Polyus mined 25 tonnes of this and Norilsk Nickel produced 8 tonnes.
