Boeing Likely to Pick Commerce One Over Oracle for Web Exchange

Boeing Likely to Pick Commerce One Over Oracle for Web Exchange
Seattle, March 14 (Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co. is likely to
select Commerce One Inc. over Oracle Corp. for a contract to build
an Internet trading exchange for aircraft parts, people familiar
with the talks said.
Boeing has been in talks with software companies and other
potential aerospace partners to create what would be one of the
world`s largest online exchanges, a Web-based trading hub where
aerospace suppliers could bid on airplane parts contracts.
The parts-and-services exchange, which could be announced as
early as this month, would give Commerce One a crucial win over
Oracle in the race to build exchanges in the business-to-business
electronic-commerce market, forecast to reach $2.7 trillion in
2004, according to Forrester Research Inc.
``Boeing`s a golden account, and they have a great deal of
marketing as well as financial value,`` said Marty Gruhn, an
analyst at Summit Strategies Inc. ``They give the company that
wins it a good deal of credibility.``
Oracle President Ray Lane conceded that his company might not
win the contract. He said Commerce One was offering Boeing an
equity stake and Oracle refused to match that bid.
``It doesn`t get down to software functionality; it`s how
much you want to give your company away,`` Lane said. ``They`re
printing more stock to give to Boeing . . . We can`t do that, and
won`t do that.``
Officials from Commerce One and Boeing declined to comment on
the negotiations.
Boeing
For Boeing, the exchange could help push down its ordering
costs at a time aircraft prices are under heavy pressure because
of competition with Airbus Industrie.
Boeing has redoubled efforts to trim factory space, buy lower
cost supplies from fewer companies, and build planes with fewer
custom parts. Production bottlenecks led to unexpected losses in
its commercial plane business in 1997 and 1998.
Unlike automakers or consumer-goods companies, plane makers
can`t rely on high-volume production to cut costs. Each jet is
painstakingly built and regulators must inspect any changes in the
design of each part.
A typical wide-bodied jet contains 3 million-plus parts,
costs more than $100 million and takes a year or more to design,
produce and test. Boeing spends about $36 billion a year buying
parts and services from more than 30,000 suppliers.
``The procurement process is very expensive and inefficient
to begin with, so anything that improves the efficiency of that is
worth doing,`` said Gary Abbott, a software analyst at Punk,
Ziegel & Co. ``It`ll be the large buyers that are going to realize
the bulk of these savings.``
Boeing Chief Financial Officer Deborah Hopkins has made
cutting overhead one of her top priorities since coming to Boeing
from General Motors Corp. in late 1998. Last month she also helped
recruit a former colleague from Unisys Corp., Anil Shrikhande, to
head a new division called ``New Ventures`` intended to tap
opportunities in e-commerce.
``We expect to be a leader in aerospace e-commerce,`` Boeing
spokesman Larry McCracken said. ``We`re looking at a lot of
opportunities, and at this time don`t have anything to announce.``
Competitive Landscape
Boeing is also exploring other alliances and joint ventures,
with the goal of uniting rivals and partners in a single industry-
wide marketplace.
General Electric Co., Honeywell International Inc. and United
Technologies Corp. have all been approached, though none have
agreed yet to participate, according to a person familiar with the
talks.
United Technologies and Honeywell joined last month with
supply chain management software firm i2 Technologies Inc. to
create their own aerospace parts exchange. Their venture offers
inventory-planning services and focuses on ``aftermarket`` parts,
replacement supplies after an aircraft is built.
GE, the world`s largest maker of jet engines, confirmed it is
negotiating with ``major players`` for an aerospace parts
exchange, though spokesman Rick Kennedy declined to say what
companies GE was negotiating with.
United Technologies and Honeywell have said they would
eventually like to include competitors such as GE in the exchange.
General Electric said it favors one exchange or compatible
exchanges for the airline manufacturing industry.
Technology Race
Commerce One, which makes software to process orders online,
has been racing with Oracle Corp. and Ariba Inc. to line up
partners to create Internet exchanges that connect companies with
their suppliers on the Web.
Shares of Commerce One have soared 3,500 percent since it
went public on July 1. Ariba surged 2,500 percent from its June 23
initial public offering.
Oracle and Commerce One each struck separate agreements to
build an auto parts exchange, with Oracle and Ford Motor Co.
teaming up, and Commerce One joining with General Motors Co. They
were forced to collaborate when the automakers, joined by
DaimlerChrysler AG, decided to combine the exchanges into a single
industry-wide parts marketplace.
Oracle separately announced agreements to create an exchange
for Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Carrefour SA, two of the world`s
largest merchants, and a convenience store supplies exchange with
Chevron Corp., and McLane Co., a Wal-Mart Stores Inc. subsidiary.
Ariba, for its part, is creating an exchange with Dell
Computer Corp. Dell will use Ariba`s software to buy $2 billion
worth of supplies a year over the Internet.
Old Rivalry
The rivalry between Commerce One and Oracle stems back to
Commerce One Chief Executive Mark Hoffman`s days as the head of
database software maker Sybase Inc.
At Sybase, Hoffman waged war with Oracle to win corporate
customers in the late `80s and early `90s. While Oracle ultimately
won the ``database wars`` -- boasting 40 percent of the market
while Sybase has 4 percent -- Hoffman`s Commerce One so far has
the upper hand on online exchanges.
Commerce One has announced 72 Internet exchanges and 33 of
them are now up and running, said Dresdner Kleinwort Benson
analyst David Garrity. In contrast, Oracle last week announced its
third exchange, none of which are fully functional yet. Even
Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison acknowledged that his company was
playing ``catch-up`` to Commerce One.

Hi DimStar,

hallo trinity,
