Dividende MPC Container 2024

Alphaliner:
Charter market: Red Sea crisis pushes up charter rates
The crisis in the Red Sea, with a growing demand for Asia-Europe extra loaders, Red Sea traders and feeders in the Atlantic, as well as sustained volumes of cargo from Asia in the run up to the Chinese New Year have kept the charter market busy in the past days. Charter rates have benefited from this high activity, and have been rising across the board.
‘Classic panamaxes’ (4,000-5,299 teu) and units of 2,000-2,600 teu have posted the largest gains, but most segments are on a rising trend ratewise, against a backdrop of continued shortage of prompt charter tonnage. This is an unexpected change of fortune for a market which had been steadily declining in recent times, with no prospect of any durable recovery due to incessant deliveries of newbuilding tonnage.
Although the risks of overcapacity have not gone away for 2024 given the 3 M teu of new ships due to hit the water, the current developments contribute to temporarily masking the problem and are a boon for non-operating owners (NOOS). Maersk for example has been a very active charterer, securing more than a dozen NOO vessels since early January, including for both long term requirements and short term ones.
Smaller operators like Tailwind, Carrier53 and SeaLead have meanwhile been busy fixing ships, mainly smaller ones, for trips between Asia and Europe or to the Red Sea. Demand for feeders in the Atlantic has also risen significantly, with carriers organizing contingent services west of Suez, to offset the delays created by the deviation of the large mainline vessels via the Cape of Good Hope.
Going forward, the market is anticipated to slow down due to the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, with, in theory, less capacity needed. Reflecting this, the SCFI grew only moderately on Friday after one month of double-digit increases. However disruptions in the Red Sea are set to continue, and will likely contribute to supporting demand for tonnage.
How soon the market will come back to reality for NOOs will very much depend on how long the situation in the Red Sea will last. But for sure, there is no major change to expect in the short term and the market should remain on a positive trend for tonnage providers in the foreseeable future.

Antwort an Aurcaner bzg. MPC Steuer
