ISN Industry Analysis: Business-to-Business
E-Commerce
Thursday, October 07, 1999 3:03 PM
by Chirag Amin, M.D.
As we have seen from the rapid growth of the Internet, many small business
startups
have been able to grow at a rapid pace by conducting business transactions
online,
aggressively expanding their marketing and sales presence. The area where this
has
been the most evident has been in the sale of general merchandise to
consumers over
the Internet, as companies such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) and eToys
(NASDAQ: ETYS) have far outpaced their brick-and-mortar equivalents in terms of
sales and revenue growth. And with the holiday season rapidly approaching, the
companies in the consumer e-commerce sector will likely continue to prosper.
Nevertheless, in light of the attention that Wall Street has given to the online
retailers,
the one sector that is poised to grow at an even faster pace is the
business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce sector. Although the task of linking large
companies to various suppliers around the world is a cumbersome task, the
potential
rewards can be very impressive. Goldman Sachs, a large investment firm and
IPO
underwriter, predicts that B2B e-commerce sales will yield over $1 trillion over
the next
five years. This market base is so large that it dwarfs that of the consumer
e-commerce sector, which is only a mere 10% of the size of the B2B e-commerce
market. B2B e-commerce currently accounts for about 85% of the total commerce
done over the Internet in the U.S.
One reason for the tremendous market size for the B2B e-commerce sector is
due to
the diverse nature of businesses and suppliers in the U.S., ranging from
biotechnology
research to solid waste. As initially discussed in Jay Somaney`s ISN article on
B2B
e-commerce on 9/21/98, there are several advantages that favor the development
of
companies doing business online, all of which translate into cost savings and
increased operating efficiency for the companies involved. As companies are
able to
streamline their operating costs by directly dealing with suppliers over the
Internet,
B2B e-commerce companies will rapidly become an essential business standard,
trickling down to business of all sizes and walks of life.
Despite the enormous market potential in the B2B e-commerce industry, only a
handful of players have been able to thrive in this sector, as the barriers-to-entry
have
become increasingly more difficult as the pioneer B2B e-commerce companies
stake
out their niches. In addition, the B2B e-commerce industry is still in its infancy,
with
more and more companies becoming a part of this business revolution on a daily
basis. In addition, only recently has Wall Street been able to appreciate the
enormous potential of the B2B e-commerce sector, with investment firms such as
Goldman Sachs, BancBoston Robertson Stephens, and Bear Stearns just recently
initiating coverage on these stocks. Below, I will briefly discuss some of the
recent
high-flyers in this industry segment, dubbed by many to be the hottest sector on
Wall
Street:
VerticalNet Inc. (NASDAQ: VERT) Recent Price: 46 7/8
VerticalNet Inc. is a Horsham, Pennsylvania-based owner and operator of
B2B-targeted vertical trade communities over the Internet. VERT currently
operates
these exchanges in over 47 industries, including everything from solid-waste to
scientific research and biotechnology, and has generated over $7.5 million in
sales.
The stock is 36% owned by Internet venture capital company Internet Capital
Group
(NASDAQ: ICGE). The stock has recently broke out to the upside on high trading
volume, recently crossing its 50-day moving average. We recommended
purchasing
this stock as a long-term play on 10/4/99, and continue to like its long-term
growth
prospects.
Breakaway Solutions (NASDAQ: BWAY) Recent Price: 42 ¼
Breakaway Solutions is a Boston, Massachusetts-based provider of full-service
B2B
e-commerce solutions, including strategy services, managing,
customer-relationship,
and strategy services. Breakaway Solutions focuses on mid-sized businesses,
instead of the larger Fortune 500 companies. The company went public on
10/6/99,
and had an extremely successful IPO debut, up over 200% on its first day. The
company was featured on CNBC`s Business Center on 10/6/99, where they
interviewed company CEO Gordon Brooks. Their lead underwriter is Morgan
Stanley.
PurchasePro.com (NASDAQ: PPRO) Recent Price: 37 ¾
PurchasePro.com, Inc. is a Las Vegas, Nevada-based provider of Internet
business-to-business electronic commerce services, comprised of public and
private
e-marketplaces where businesses can buy and sell a range of products and
services.
Like Breakaway Solutions, PurchasePro.com targets small and medium-sized
businesses. The stock recently IPOd on 9/14/99, and is currently up over 200%
from
its initial offering price of $12. The company recently formed a strategic alliance
with
Ariba, Inc., in which PurchasePro.com will use the Ariba Networks e-commerce
platform and services to conduct its B2B e-commerce transactions.
Ariba, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARBA) Recent Price: 172 27/32
Ariba, Inc. is a Sunnyvale, California-based provider of B2B e-commerce
solutions,
targeting businesses of all sizes. It is considered by many to be the market
leader in
the B2B e-commerce sector, concentrating its efforts on the e-procurement of
operating revenues. The stock IPOed about four months ago, and is up several
hundred percent from its offering price.
Commerce One (NASDAQ: CMRC) Recent Price: 114 ¾
Commerce One is a Walnut Creek, California-based provider of B2B e-commerce
solutions, competing with Ariba in the area of e-procurement of operating
revenues. Its
software platform, BuySite, allows businesses to track the purchasing records of
employees as well as other internal documents, thus increasing the operating
efficiency of their clients.
Chemdex (NASDAQ: CMDX) Recent Price: 35 15/32
Chemdex is a Palo Alto-California-based provider of B2B e-commerce solutions
to
scientific research labs, a $15 billion industry in the U.S. Chemdex`s database
contains over 200,000 products, and allows company`s to automate purchase
orders,
transaction approval, and billing, thus cutting down on unauthorized purchases.
The
company recently acquired Promedix.com, an online B2B marketplace that
conducts
business transactions between suppliers of specialty medical products and
companies in the healthcare industry.
ICGE sollte man beobachten.

Hallo,

Internationale Expansion
Internet2000 betreut heute ca. 2.000 Business Partner in 22 Ländern.
Vertriebsstrategie
