Vodafone, Japan Telecom start negotiations for hybrid phone service - report

TOKYO (AFX) - Vodafone KK and Japan Telecom Co have entered into negotiations to jointly offer companies a service that enables people indoors to
use mobile phones as cordless fixed-line handsets, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported citing the firms` top executives.
The two companies aim to reach an agreement by the end of the year, the business daily said.
Vodafone KK, the local arm of UK firm Vodafone Group PLC, is Japan`s third-largest mobile phone service provider. Japan Telecom, which is under the
umbrella of Softbank Corp, is the nation`s third-largest fixed-line phone company.
Under the new service, a mobile phone would make a cordless connection to a fixed-line network when indoors, making possible calls to and from outside as
well as intracompany calls. When the user is outside the office, the handset functions as a regular mobile phone, the newspaper said.
With the integration of fixed-line and cellular service expected to attract customers, other major telecom firms including Nippon Telegraph and Telephone
Corp (NTT) group and KDDI Corp are likely to develop their own services, it said.
The government is set to unify phone numbers for both types of services as early as fiscal 2007, according to the report.

Wundert mich trotzdem, dass die so heftig reagiert haben. Chartechnisch ausgebrochen, leider hier noch unter Pari. Ich denke, dass es morgen in Japan durchaus weiter nach oben gehen kann.
