Seltene Erden nehmen in unserem täglichen Leben eine immer größere Rolle ein. Sie finden sich in Handys, Energiesparlampen, Windkraftanlagen oder Akkus für Elektroautos. Bereits in den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat sich deswegen die Nachfrage mehr als verdreifacht, Tendenz weiter deutlich steigend. China dominiert mit einem Marktanteil von 97 Prozent den Welthandel. Wie abhängig das Ausland von China ist, verdeutlicht auch die jüngste Entwicklung. So hat die chinesische Regierung die Ausfuhr Seltener Erden radikal gedrosselt. Die Versorgung mit den begehrten Metallen, die für viele Schlüsseltechnologien unabdingbar sind, kommt außerhalb Chinas also langsam aber sicher zum Erliegen. Preiserhöhungen sind damit vorprogrammiert. Akteure im Geschäft mit Seltenen Erden sind also nicht zuletzt für Börsianer von großem Interesse. Die Rohstoffexperten Brüning und Böhmer untersuchen, welche Firmen das Potenzial haben, von dem sich abzeichnenden Boom zu profitieren, und zeigen auf, was Anleger tun müssen, um zu den Gewinnern zu gehören.

Wie so oft bei chemischen Fachbegriffen, kann die Masse der Bevölkerung mit „Seltene Erden“ nur wenig anfangen. Doch man kann das Thema der Seltenen Erden sehr schnell fassbar machen: Ohne die ausreichende Versorgung mit einigen Seltenen Erden müssten Teile der deutschen Industrie die Produktion einstellen. Da die Einsatzgebiete so vielfältig sind, aber die wichtigste Quelle mit China so begrenzt ist, gehört nicht viel dazu, sich vorzustellen, dass wir vor großen Herausforderungen stehen.

Dennoch sind die Seltenen Erden immer noch ein Randthema – das aber stetig und vor allem schnell an Bedeutung gewinnt. Dazu reicht schon ein kurzer Blick zurück: Bereits Ende 2008 waren wir nach einigen Gesprächen auf Messen in den Vereinigten Staaten mit verschiedenen Rohstoffexperten auf das Thema Seltene Erden aufmerksam geworden. Es dauerte dann noch bis zum März 2009, bis wir die erste Sektorstudie zum Thema Seltene Erden veröffentlichten. Die Wirkung dieser Studie hielt sich noch in Grenzen. Doch das lag vor allem daran, dass zu der Zeit viele Investoren ganz einfach andere Sorgen hatten, als sich um neue Trends zu kümmern. Bei vielen Rohstoffunternehmen ging es in diesen Märztagen ums nackte Überleben. Erinnern Sie sich: Der DAX notierte im Tief bei rund 3.600 Punkten. Düstere Szenarien über den weiteren Verlauf der Krise machten die Runde. Die Verunsicherung an den Märkten war quasi mit Händen zu greifen. Aber wir hatten mit dieser Sektorstudie den richtigen Riecher. Im Vorfeld war es allerdings schwierig, überhaupt zehn börsennotierte Firmen zu finden, die etwas mit dem Thema Seltene Erden zu tun hatten...

Interview mit dem Rohstoffexperten, Fondsmanager und Bestseller Buchautor Christoph Brüning über das Thema „Seltene Erden“ weltweit!

F: Herr Brüning, der Begriff „Seltene Erden“ war noch vor nicht allzu langer Zeit vollkommen unbekannt. Mittlerweile findet man ihn regelmäßig in den breiten Publikumsmedien. Was genau sind bitte „Seltene Erden“?

A: Erst einmal ist der Begriff irreführend. Diese Elemente sind nicht selten. In der Häufigkeit rangieren viele der insgesamt 17 Seltenerdmetalle, so der heute gebräuchliche Name, vor Gold oder auch Silber. Der Struktur nach sind es zudem Metalle. Selten sind hingegen Vorkommen, in denen die einzelnen Elemente auch in einer ökonomisch nutzbaren Häufung auftreten. Derzeit beherrscht China den Weltmarkt mit einem Produktionsanteil von mehr als 95% - und das obwohl maximal 70% der Vorkommen in China liegen.

F: Und warum interessiert sich auf einmal die breite Öffentlichkeit dafür?
A: Grundsätzlich handelt es sich dabei um Technologiemetalle, die in vielen alltäglichen Anwendungen nicht mehr wegzudenken sind. Ob das Neodym in Magneten oder Cer in Abgaskatalysatoren. Oft werden zwar nur sehr kleine Mengen benötigt, aber das besondere ist auch, dass einige Elemente nicht zu ersetzen sind. Bricht hier die Versorgung zusammen, dann können Massengüter wie Computerchips nicht mehr produziert werden. Daher ergibt sich auch die strategische Bedeutung der Metalle.

F: Wie kamen Sie zum Thema "Seltene Erden"?

Auf einer Veranstaltung im Januar 2008 hatten zwei Aussteller einen "Prius" vor ihren Stand gestellt. Die Vorstände trugen alle Krawatten mit dem Periodensystem als Muster, da wurde ich sofort aufmerksam. Nach einem ausführlichen Gespräch habe ich verstanden das beide Firmen Seltene Erden explorieren und wofür diese eingesetzt werden. Ich hielt das für einen Zukunftsmarkt und habe dann detaillierter informiert, so ist auch dann die erste Studie zum Thema im März 2009 entstanden.

F: Würden Sie die seltenen Erden von ihrer politischen Bedeutung her mit dem Erdöl gleichsetzen?

Es gibt hier schon Parallelen aber der große Unterschied ist das die SE noch ein sehr kleiner Markt ist und von einem Land kontrolliert wird. Die Folgen der Exportbeschränkungen und Ausfuhrsteuern haben lediglich die Preise der Endprodukte beeinflusst, einen Autofreien Sonntag haben wir nicht zu erwarten.

F: Sie sagen, ein Großteil der Vorkommen liegt auf chinesischem Boden. Gibt es anderorts keine Vorkommen, lohnt es sich nicht, die Vorkommen andernorts auszubeuten oder wurde einfach noch nicht mit der Erschließung begonnen?

A: Doch diese Vorkommen gibt es schon. Vor der chinesischen Dominanz lag das Zentrum der weltweiten Produktion in den USA. Die Mountain Pass Mine wird derzeit von Molycorp wieder in Produktion gebracht. Mit dem Start dort ist 2012 zu rechnen. Schon Ende 2011 will Lynas in Australien das Mount Weld Projekt starten. Früher wurde auch in der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, exakt in Kirgistan, produziert. Diese Mine hat nun Stans Energy übernommen. Die wenigen Vorkommen in Europa sind noch weit von der Produktion entfernt. Tasman Metals entwickelt jedoch ein Vorkommen in Schweden, was sich durch die Nähe zu wichtigen Abnehmerländern wie Deutschland auszeichnet.

F: Wie schätzen Sie die weitere Entwicklung im Bereich seltene Erden
ein? Was geschieht, wenn China die Märkte im Regen stehen lässt?

Wir erwarten, dass China seine Ausfuhrquote für die zweite Jahreshälfte im Juni weiter senken wird. Dies hat zwei Effekte: Erstens werden die Preise weiter steigen und es werden weniger Industrieprodukte fertig gestellt und die Preise der Aktiengesellschaften sollten stabil bleiben oder steigen. Außerdem bleiben viele Technologien in den Schubladen, denn solange die Versorgung für SE nicht gesichert ist, wird kein Manager ein Projekt beginnen.

F: Kann der Hochtechnologiesektor auf Alternativen ausweichen?

Nicht vollständig. Aber teilweise passiert das schon. So hat der PC-Hersteller Dell Inc. schon reagiert und verzichtet bei seinen neuen Produkten auf Tantal. Sicherlich arbeiten Ingenieure überall an günstigeren Alternativen, aber ein schneller Wechsel zu Alternativen ist nicht möglich. Ein Effekt ist aber zu erwarten, wenn der Markt für Seltene Erden nicht in absehbarer Zeit ausreichend bedient werden kann, dann werden sicher andere Märkte entstehen.

F: Können Anleger von der geschilderten Situation profitieren? Wenn ja, wie?
Für uns stellt die Situation immer noch eine Chance dar, aber man muss hier die Spreu vom Weizen trennen. Nur die führenden und am weitesten fortgeschrittenen Unternehmen werden von der anstehenden Entwicklung profitieren. Aber auch auf einige der Nachzügler kann man noch setzen, doch sollte zumindest schon eine Ressourcenschätzung vorliegen. Die Trittbrettfahrer unter den Unternehmen, die jetzt aufspringen, sollte man jedoch meiden.


F: Gibt es im Markt der seltenen Erden einen großen Standardplayer, den man sich ins Depot legen kann, oder muss man auf kleinere Unternehmen ausweichen?

Wir haben in unserem Buch den gesamten Sektor analysiert und sind zu dem Resultat gekommen, dass eine Handvoll Unternehmen überproportional von der Entwicklung profitieren werden. Hier sollte man auf die Unternehmen achten, die nahe an der Produktion sind und auf die Projekte, die einen hohen Anteil an den schweren Seltenerdelementen haben.

Access to raw materials at competitive prices has become essential to the functioning of all industrialized economies. Cobalt is one of those raw materials, so too will be Scandium.

Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming indicated Monday that Beijing will study measures to address sharp price increases in rare earth minerals.

''Surges in rare earth prices are not desirable for the Chinese economy as they will induce import inflation,'' Chen was quoted by Japanese trade minister Banri Kaieda as telling him in a meeting in Beijing. ''China would like to address speculative price movements.''

It is unusual that a senior Chinese official expresses concern about rises in rare earth prices.
Kaieda told reporters after the meeting that he and Chen shared a view that a surge in rare earth prices would lead to higher prices in parts using rare earths that China imports from Japan and that could negatively affect the Chinese economy whose biggest risk is inflation.

Kaieda, minister of economy, trade and industry, asked that China ensure a stable supply of rare earths to Japan without reducing export quotas.

Lynas Corp: Unterstützung für malaysische Raffinerie wächst


Sydney 18.07.2011 (www.emfis.com) Das australische Seltenen-Erden-Unternehmen Lynas Corp hat kürzlich einen Werbefeldzug zu die geplante Verarbeitungsanlage für Rare Elements in Malaysia geführt und war diesbezüglich nicht unerfolgreich.

Die Australier haben eine Gesprächsrunde mit Vertretern der zuständigen Bezirks-Regierung und Bürgern geführt und scheinbar ist es Lynas Corp gelungen, den Nutzen der Anlage für die Region zu verdeutlichen. Auch konnten Sicherheitsbedenken weitgehend zerstreut oder aber zumindest reduziert werden. Ob dadurch der Widerstand einiger Bürgergruppen vollständig abebbt, ist zwar fraglich, aber für den Bau dieser Anlage ohnehin eher sekundär.

Bau eigentlich fast sicher

Sehr viel entscheidender ist, dass die Internationale Atom-Energiebehörde die Anlage für sicher erachtet, wenn noch einige bauliche Maßnahmen erfolgen, die für Lynas Corp kein allzu großes Problem darstellen. Insgesamt kann daher mit einer fast schon an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit davon ausgegangen werden, dass die Genehmigung der zuständigen malaysischen Behörde nicht mehr lange auf sich warten lässt.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Commencement of Concentration Plant operations with commissioning and ramp-up progressing well. REO grade of concentrate in line with, and percentage REO recovery significantly above, ramp-up schedule targets.
• Confirmation by the independent panel of international experts from the IAEA that the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (“LAMP”) in Kuantan, Malaysia, once completed later this year, is expected to be safe and fully compliant with international standards.
• Announcement by the Malaysian Government to implement recommendations within the IAEA report, providing a conclusive path towards regulatory approvals for the pre-operational licence.
• Issuance of Letter of Award for Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning Assistance of the Phase 2 expansion to 22,000t REO of the LAMP.
• Signing of a Letter of Intent with Siemens to establish a joint venture company for the sustainable production of neodymium based Rare Earths magnets.
• Completion of Mount Weld latest drilling campaign with encouraging initial assay results.
• Release of the second half 2011 China export quota, resulting in 30,184 tonnes for 2011. The total export quota remains well below the demand for Rare Earths outside of China.
• Increasing average quarterly price for the Mount Weld Rare Earths distribution, on Free On Board (FOB) China basis, to US$173.20/kg REO, an increase of 86%. The domestic Rare Earths Chinese price increased by 200% across the quarter to US$69.38/kg REO.
• Increasing prices continue post quarter end. As at 25 July 2011, the average price for the Mount Weld Rare Earths composition was US$227.52/kg on a FOB China basis and US$98.16/kg REO on a domestic Chinese price basis.

Damit ist IMHO die Kuh vom Eis bezogen auf die Berichte und Artikel, wie u.a. von der NYT, die Behauptungen/Spekulationen aufstellen auf Grund der Anti-Lynas Bewgung und auf Grund der Forderung der AELB die Erfüllungen der Punkte aus dem Bericht der IAEA würde eine Produktionsverzögerung von 1 - 2 Jahre bedeuten, war wohl mehr Wunschdenken auf Grund nationaler und wirtschaftlicher Eigeninteressen.

Demand for Rare Earths is forecast to grow at 8-11% per year between 2011 and 2014. Many experts are predicting that the Chinese, and those end users who moved to China for security of supply, will be internally consuming most of the country's rare earth production by about 2014.

Rare earth demand is driven by several global macroeconomic trends:

· Miniaturization

· Environmental protection

· Increasing demand for energy, power and fuel efficiency

The highest demand growth is expected for magnets and metal alloys - hybrid and electric vehicles along with wind turbines (also High Speed Rail) will compete for the essential materials and there are no substitutions for the REEs used in these applications. An increased use of energy efficient fluorescent lights and growing demand for LCDs, PDPs will increase the use of phosphors.

The French Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières rates high tech metals as critical, or not, based on three criteria:

· Possibility (or not) of substitution

· Irreplaceable functionality

· Potential supply risks

It's very obvious REEs are critical metals and that the west is going to need a secure, long term supply of Rare Earth Elements completely independent of Chinese control.

There are a lot of junior companies in this space competing for investor attention.

Wilderness of mirrors

"Wilderness of Mirrors" is a phrase coined by the 1950s era counter-intelligence chief John Foster Dulles to describe the intelligence game. In particular, the phrase refers to the difficulty of separating disinformation from truth.

One of the world's foremost REE geologists and mineralogists Anthony "Tony" Marianno says each REE deposit, assuming a favorable political climate and good logistics, will need certain conditions present:



· Favorable mineralogy and lanthanide distribution

· Necessary grade and tonnage

· Mining and mineral processing at low costs

· Successful chemical cracking of the individual lanthanides for their

isolation and eventual recovery

· Low values of thorium, uranium and other deleterious impurities

· Minimum environmental impact

Dudley Kingsnorth of Industrial Minerals Company of Australia (IMCOA) outlines the necessary steps to take a REE deposit all the way to production:



· Prove resource: grade, distribution and understand mineralogy

· Define process and bench scale - each ore-body is unique. Because of this uniqueness a new separation process has to be developed for each individual deposit

· Conduct pre-feasibility study

· Demonstrate technical and commercial viability of the process

· Obtain environmental approval

· *Publish Letters of Intent - marketing is customer specific. The main value added from Rare Earths is not in the mining and extraction, so it is necessary to either develop your own supply chain or gain access to an existing supply chain

· Complete a bankable feasibility study

· Effect construction and start-up

There are significant barriers to entry into the Rare Earths market:

· Developing a rare earth mine and processing plant is capital intensive. Capacity costs are high - plus US$30,000 per tonne of annual separated capacity versus less than US$3,500.00 for an open pit mine in the US. History shows that the development time can be very long at 10-15 years

· Operational expertise is very limited outside of China - limited technical expertise on mining, cracking and separating

· Major mining companies, and institutions, are put off by investment in such a tightly focused market - this leaves juniors with potential development issues

Eindruck das die Medien dort seit den nachweislich falschen Negativberichten der NYT über Lynas die weitere Berichterstattung zu diesem Thema auf hier MCP/GWG usw. beschränken und Lynas weitgehenst ignorieren.
Ich weiss dass dies auch bei allen anderen Werten außerhalb Nordamerikas durchaus üblich ist nur das bestätigt bei mir den Verdacht das der Ursprung mit der ganzen profisionellen Unterstützung für u.a. die "Stop Lynas" Bewegung, aus Noramerika kommt und nicht, wie hier einige vermuten, in China zu suchen ist.

Die Seltenen Erden sind Synonym für den technischen Fortschritt. Drei Beispiele: Ohne diese Elemente hätte es kein Farbfernsehen gegeben, die Elektrifizierung der Autos wäre nicht möglich und Windräder würden wesentlich ineffizienter arbeiten. Die Seltenen Erden haben längst Einzug in den technischen Alltag gefunden. Die Produktion von z.B. Halbleitern für Handys kann nicht einfach umgestellt werden. Viele technische Neuerungen und Weiterentwicklungen bleiben derzeit noch in den Schubladen der Ingenieure von Siemens, GE oder Sumitomo, da die dauerhafte Versorgung mit Seltenen Erden nicht gesichert ist.

5 Million Hours LTI Free Achieved at Lynas Advanced Materials Plant

Lynas Corporation Limited (“Lynas”) (ASX:LYC, OTC:LYSDY) is pleased to announce a major milestone in achieving 5 million hours Lost Time Injury (“LTI”) free in the development and continuing construction of the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) in the Gebeng Industrial Estate, near Kuantan, Malaysia.

The Concentration Plant in Western Australia commenced feed of ore on 14 May 2011 and is performing well. First feed of concentrate at the LAMP is scheduled to be achieved in the fourth quarter of 2011. Lynas has received all required approvals to construct the LAMP, and is in the process of applying for all pre-operation and operation approvals.

Seltene Erden – Warum ist der Sektor plötzlich unter Druck und Wie geht es weiter?

Drei Gründe und ein Ausblick

Die heftige Reaktion der letzten Wochen sind eine Spiegelbild des Marktes, aber für den Sektor kommen noch einige spezielle Faktoren hinzu, die ich hier beleuchten möchte. Sind das nachhaltige Faktoren? Stimmt die aktuelle Berichterstattung? Was planen die großen Unternehmen? Was beeinflusst die Preise für Seltenerdoxide? Und Wie geht es jetzt weiter?

1. Molycorp. stürzt ab und belastet den Sektor

Das kalifornische Unternehmen wurde von einem starken Konsortium unter Führung von JP Morgan und Morgan Stanley im letzten Sommer an die Börse geführt, bislang eine Erfolgsstory auch weil die Banken hinter dem Projekt stehen. Am 20.9. erkannte der führende JP Morgan Analyst die fallenden Preise für Seltenerdmetalloxide und passte seine Aussichten für Molycorp. an. Die Reaktion an der Börse fiel heftig aus, die Aktie stürzte von 53.01 CDN auf 35 CDN und mittlerweile auf 32.87 CDN ab. Sicher war die Einschätzung und Anpassung des Analysten richtig, aber seine Aussage hat alle Werte des Sektors belastet und im Sog von Molycorp. fielen die meisten Kurse.

2. Seltene Erden fallen weil Toyota Alternativen entwickelt –

Rare Earths Fall as Toyota Develops Alternatives (Bloomberg Artikel vom 29.9.2011)

Dieser Artikel von Sonja Elmquist, einer bisher nur als Goldreporterin aufgetretenen Journalistin, hat in den letzten beiden Tagen zu weiteren Verkäufen geführt. Wenn man nur die Überschrift liest, dann ist eine solche Reaktion auch verständlich, aber genau das ist hier das Problem.

Alle Unternehmen entwickeln ständig Alternativen zu bestehenden Produkten, das heißt aber im Umkehrschluss nicht, dass sie ihre Produktion sofort umstellen könnten. Im Gegenteil für die nächsten Jahre gibt es keine Alternativen für Toyota, Siemens und Sumitomo. „Einige Toyota-Modelle werden mit Induktionsmotoren ausgestattet, die auf Seltenerdmagnete verzichten.“ sagte John Hanson ein Sprecher des Unternehmens. Das Toyota sich gerne so zitieren lässt ist sicher auch teilweise politisch motiviert, aber auch hier ist ja die Aussage „Einige“, vielleicht sind hier Modelle ab 2014 gemeint? Die aktuelle Produktion ist sicher nicht gemeint.

Im Verlauf des Artikels wird dann auf GM (General Motors) eingegangen und hier wird mein Argument untermauert, denn der Chevy Malibu Eco, soll mit „weniger“ Magneten auskommen. Auch bei GE (General Electric) wird die Situation nicht anders eingeschätzt, Steve Duclos, Wissenschaftlicher Leiter GE Global Research, “In all of our businesses we’re looking to reduce our usage.” Natürlich wollen sie das erreichen, aber es wird sicher Zeit kosten.

3. Der aktuelle Preisverfall

Der Preisverfall hat zwei weniger beachtete Gründe, Japan hat seine Importe nach dem Tsunami Unglück reduziert und der Schmuggel mit Seltenerdlegierungen floriert weiterhin. Insgesamt hatte sich der gesamte Markt ja an die restriktive Exportpolitik der Chinesen angepasst, aber Japan ist der Topimporteuer von Seltenen Erden weltweit. Den Schmuggel haben die Chinesen erstaunlicherweise immer noch nicht im Griff.

4. Der Ausblick - Folgende Faktoren sind entscheidend:

Produktion und Exportpolitik Chinas, Entwicklung der Nachfrage und Produktion außerhalb Chinas

Die Exportpolitik Chinas wird sich nicht ändern im Gegenteil, wenn man Dr. Zhanheng Chen, Director of the Academic Department of the Chinese Society of Rare Earths (CSRE), genau zugehört hat, dann wird China mittelfristig zu einem Netto- Importeur von Seltenen Erden werden. Für 2012 und 2013 werden die Chinesische Produktion auf 90.000, bzw. 87.000 Tonnen sinken, damit wird ein weiteres Absinken der Exportquote einhergehen. Die globale Nachfrage soll seiner Meinung nach ab 2012 schon von Unternehmen außerhalb Chinas mit versorgt werden.

Entwicklung der Nachfrage

Der anerkannte australische Experte Dudley Kingsworth (IMCOA) erwartet ein jährliches Wachstum des Marktes von mehr als 15% und bis 2015 schätzt wer die Nachfrage auf 185.000 Tonnen. Dr.Chen sieht den Markt 2015 bei knapp unter 180.000 Tonnen. Klare Aussagen zum Thema Nachfrage, die sicher noch viel grösser ausfallen würde, wenn es zeitnah gesicherte Produktionen gäbe. Diese Nachfrage muss gestillt werden und die Unternehmen, die sich hier Marktanteile sichern werden überproportional profitieren (Siehe Artikel “Die ersten werden die Ersten sein“).

Produktion außerhalb Chinas

In den Startlöchern stehen Lynas Corp. , Molycorp. , Arafura , Alkene Resources , Avalon Rare Metals, Quest, Rare Elements und Greenland Resources. Ab 2012 und bis 2015 sollen diese Unternehmen ihre Produktion aufnehmen, denn nur so wird die globale Nachfrage mittelfristig gesichert werden. Diese Unternehmen werden den Markt außerhalb Chinas „unter sich aufteilen“.

Fazit - Wiegeht es weiter ?

Grundsätzlich guten Aussichten für diese Unternehmen und sicher auch gute Aussichten für Aktionäre nach dem aktuellen Abverkauf. Der Sektor bleibt weiter sehr attraktiv für Investoren, die bestimmenden Faktoren stimmen und die mittelfristigen und langfristigen Aussichten sind gut.

Seltene Erden ist ein Oberbegriff für eine Gruppe von Metallen beziehungsweise chemischen Elementen. Der Markt für diese Seltenen Erden hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren enorm entwickelt und ist stark angewachsen. Zur Verwendung kommen die Seltenen Erden vor allem in zahlreichen Schlüsseltechnologien. Die mit Abstand größten Vorkommen befinden sich in China, genauer gesagt im Bereich der Inneren Mongolei, wo etwa 95 Prozent der weltweit vorhandenen Seltenen Erden gefördert werden. Immer wieder gibt es allerdings Befürchtungen, dass es aufgrund der chinesischen Exportpolitik zu Engpässen kommen könnte. Allerdings haben in den vergangenen Jahren zahlreiche Bergbauunternehmen neue Förderungen von Seltenen Erden angekündigt und dafür teilweise bereits stillgelegte Minen wieder reaktiviert, sodass sich die Knappheit an Seltenen Erden wieder legen sollte.

According to Technology Metals Research, some of the comments it has received from readers follow this line of thought: “It’s no secret that Molycorp recently has its investment rating cut from overweight to neutral by J.P. Morgan, and that the company’s share price is at a fraction of its 52-week high.” In fact, Technology Metals Research co-founder Jack Lifton had this to say about the announcement:

“…Let me get this straight: in a solvent exchange plant not yet built, not yet proven in, or run up to capacity after the proving-in bugs are worked out, Molycorp is going to run process leach solution (PLS) from an ore concentrate that it has not yet determined can be produced, with an extraction efficiency that it has not yet determined to be economical – this additional HREE-containing PLS will be run simultaneously or on top of the PLS derived from the Mountain Pass bastnaesite concentrate – which has not yet been run in the new plant. All this in a year…This is complete and utter engineering and chemical nonsense. Other than that – it’s a great story.”

In addition, TMR suggested:

“It’s something of an understatement to say that these communications from Molycorp contain some pretty bold claims. To be able to process the materials at the new HREE prospect in little over a year, as claimed by Mr. Smith, likely assumes that there are no modifications to either the budget, schedule or construction plans for the company’s new processing facility. Does this mean that Molycorp knew all along that it would potentially be including materials from this prospect, in its overall processing capabilities?”

Rare earths are an unsettling topic. Today, everyone tries to come across as having had a concrete view on these materials since at least 2002. But unless you were a scientist or directly involved in making catalysts or magnets, you probably didn’t know that rare earths existed until 2010, when the Chinese clamped down on quotas that had been in place for years. Those quotas limited both the amount of rare earth that companies in China could make, and the amount that could leave China. And all of us suddenly became rare earths experts.

Mainland prices surged between 20 and 125 per cent and continued to rise by a further 1.5- to 9-fold between January and July, before diving by between 25 and 75 per cent in the past four months as traders and users made fewer purchases and ran down their inventories.

"There is serious concern that demand for some rare earth elements might exceed present supply within a few years," the Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE), a German sustainable development research centre, said in a report last January.

"Even if China imposes no export restrictions it is to be expected that the increasing demand up to 2014 can only be met if further mines, in addition to the two planned mines in Australia and the US, are opened."

Overall, the demand-supply dynamics have not changed since the report's release. Demand for rare earth minerals outpaced supply last year and the imbalance is expected to remain until 2014, according to Mark Smith, chief executive of Molycorp Minerals, at a recent rare earths conference in Hong Kong.

Mehr als 5.000 Kilo­me­ter Luftlinie lie­­gen zwischen Malaysia und Japan. Und dennoch: Die Reaktorkatas­tro­phe in Fukushima hat auch die Menschen in Malaysia sensibilisiert für die Gefahren, die durch Radioaktivität ausgehen. Sehr zum Leidwesen des australischen Sel­te­ne-Erden-Produzenten Lynas (WKN 871 899). Der Kon­zern wollte eigentlich schon im lau­fenden Jahr mit der Produktion von Seltenen Erden auf Malaysia be­gin­nen. Doch die Menschen liefen Sturm. Der Grund: Bei der Produktion von Seltenen Erden fallen radioaktive Ab­­fallprodukte an. Und die Menschen fürch­teten um ihre Gesundheit.

Die Proteste zeigten Wirkung: Die end­gültige Genehmigung für die Anla­ge blieb aus. Der Produktionsstart verschob sich - die Aktie von Lynas begab sich auf Talfahrt. Doch jetzt scheint sich das Blatt zu wenden. Die Regierung der Provinz Pahang sieht keine ernst­haften Gefahren für Menschen und Umwelt. Damit steht einem Produktionsbeginn im ersten Quartal 2012 wohl nichts mehr im Wege.



Konsolidierung - auf hohem Niveau

Gegenwind gab es für den Kurs von Lynas zuletzt auch durch die Preisent­wick­­lung bei den Seltenen Erden. Die Prei­se gaben seit Sommer getrieben durch Rezessionssorgen nach. Allerdings dürfte dies nach der Entwicklung der vergangenen Monate keine wirkliche Überraschung sein. Immerhin hatten sich die Preise für einige der be­gehr­ten Elemente binnen eines Jahres mehr als versiebenfacht. An einen wirk­lichen Einbruch glaubt niemand. Zu wichtig sind die Metalle für Zu­kunfts­technologien wie Elektromotoren, Wind­kraft oder auch Handys. Noch immer ist die Wirtschaft abhängig von China. Das Reich der Mitte ist für rund 95 Prozent der weltweiten Seltene-Erden-Produktion verantwortlich. In den ver­gangenen Jahren hat China die Ex­port­quoten sukzessive gesenkt. Nicht zu­letzt deshalb hat der Technologiekonzern Siemens bereits im Sommer ein Joint Venture mit Lynas zum Bau von Spe­zial-Magneten, wie sie in Windrädern benötigt werden, geschlossen.

Die Preise dürften schon bald wieder nach oben drehen, schließlich hat der weltgrößte Produzent von Seltenen Erden, die staatliche chinesische Gesellschaft Inner Mongolia Baotou Rare-Earth Hi-Tech, zuletzt die Produktion ge­stoppt. Mit dem Produktionsbeginn zu Beginn des kommenden Jahres könn­te Lynas demzufolge einen Markt vor­finden, der von Knappheit geprägt ist. Ein weiterer Vorteil der Australier: Außerhalb Chinas werden meist höhere Preise für Seltene Erden gezahlt als in China selbst.

Selten günstige Chance

Die Aktie von Lynas ist mittlerweile mehr als nur günstig bewertet. Auf Basis der geschätzten Gewinne für das Geschäftsjahr 2012/13 weist das Papier lediglich ein KGV von knapp 5 aus. Angesichts der bereits bestehenden Engpässe bei einigen Seltenen Erden dürften auch die Preise wieder steigen.

Lynas Corporation Limited (ASX:LYC) says it has completed all requirements for the application to Malaysian regulatory authorities for a temporary licence for its Advanced Materials Plant in Malaysia. A decision on the application, which also includes a detailed waste management plan and safety case, is expected from the Malaysian Atomic Energy Licensing Board at the end of this month. Lynas Executive Director, Nicholas Curtis, told the Finance News Network at the end of last year he is confident the rare earths developer will ramp up production at the rare earths refinery in the first half of this year. Shares in Lynas Corporation are trading 4.04 per cent lower at $1.07.

Increase in Mt Weld Resource Estimate for the Central Lanthanide Deposit and Duncan Deposit

Highlights

 The Mineral Resource estimate for Mount Weld is now 23.9 million tonnes, at an average grade of 7.9% REO, for a total of 1.9 million tonnes REO. This represents a 37% increase versus the previous Resource estimate announced in September 2010 and a 34% increase in contained REO. This Resource is comprised of the Central Lanthanide Deposit and the Duncan Deposit.

 The Resource estimate for the Central Lanthanide Deposit has increased by 51% to 14.9 million tonnes, at an average grade of 9.8% REO, for a total of 1.5 million tonnes REO. This represents a 38% increase in contained REO.

 The Resource estimate for the Duncan Deposit has increased by 18% to 9.0 million tonnes, at an average grade of 4.8% REO, for a total of 431,600 tonnes REO. This also represents an increase of 18% in contained REO.

 Preliminary process test work on the Duncan deposit continues.

Mein persöhnliches Fazit:
Da u.a. das sogenannte HREE Yttrium weltweit nur schwer zu bekommen ist hat IMHO Lynas mit Duncan jetzt nicht nur eine weitere Ressource sondern damit auch eine Diversifizierung zur bisherigen Mt Weld Ressource.
Der Lynas Mix wurde von einigen immer wieder mal als Schwäche ausgelegt in Bezug auf die sogenannten HREE.
Mit einem stärkeren Fokus auf HREE hat LYC bisher nicht viel Yttrium aus seiner wichtigsten Ressource vorzuweisen gehabt.
Jetzt mit Duncan hat Lynas IMHO die komplette REE-Lösung.

Die Euro-Krise schwelt weiter. Daher sind seltene Erden für Anleger eine gute Versicherung. Doch der Anleger müsse aus 17 Elementen jene auswählen, die für ihn von Vorteil sein können. Denn nicht alle seltenen Erden sind knapp. Vor allem leichte seltene Erden "eignen sich sicherlich nicht für derartige Investitionen."

Lynas: Residue from rare earth plant will be safe


KUALA LUMPUR: Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd says residue from its rare earth plant in Kuantan will be “safe” and can be used to build roads.

Its managing director Datuk Mashal Ahmad said the firm had succeeded in lowering the radiation level of its residue to below 1 Becquerel per gramme (Bq/g), which is similar to the radiation level in fertiliser.

“We have also proven that the residue does not leach and is not toxic.

“Therefore, it (the residue) can be used for commercial application,” Mashal said yesterday.

He added that the water leach purification residue was classified as “very low level radioactive waste” by international standards.

However, Mashal said the company still needed approval from the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) and Department of Environment before the residue could be used for commercial purposes.

He added that such usage of the residue was “not new” and common in developed countries.

Mashal said if the residue could be used commercially, there would be no need to have a permanent disposal facility.

He said the rare earth refinery in Gebeng was expected to begin operations between April and June.

Unter diesem "China-Einfluss" haben einige westliche Länder, welche den Weltmarkt für Seltene Erden lange monopolisiert hatten, die Produktion eingeschränkt oder ganz eingestellt, und einige haben die Kooperation mit chinesischen Unternehmen gesucht.

Over recent years there has been much discussion across the world of declining fossil fuel supplies, 'peak oil' and the increasingly urgent need for sustainable energy production. And that talk has not gone unanswered. According to the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) in 2009 over $160 billion was invested globally in renewable energy capacity and manufacturing facilities, a figure that in the face of severe economic conditions rose to $211 billion in 2010.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) construction project in Malaysia achieved 8,160,000 hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free as at the end of March 2012. Subsequent to the end of the reporting period the project remains LTI free.
• On 1 February, Malaysia’s Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) announced its approval of the Temporary Operating Licence (TOL) for the LAMP in Gebeng, Malaysia. The AELB’s approval decision came after a thorough and extensive review of the project by the Malaysian Government regulatory authorities. An appeal in respect of the AELB’s decision has been lodged with the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. The Minister’s decision is expected shortly.
• During the period, Lynas secured long-term funding through a US$225m unsecured convertible bond facility with funds managed by Mount Kellett Capital Management. The proceeds of the issue will be used for construction and commissioning of Phase 1 of the LAMP and working capital. The 18-month working capital facility announced on 22 September 2011 was not utilised and has been retired.
• Following the results of the extension drilling program, the Company reported a significant upgrade to Resources at Mount Weld. The mineral Resource estimate for Mount Weld is now 23.9 million tonnes, at an average grade of 7.9% REO for a total of 1.9 million tonnes REO. This represents a 37% increase versus the previous Resource estimate announced in September 2010 and a 34% increase in contained REO.
• The Mount Weld Concentration Plant in Western Australia continues to perform well with Final Concentrate Grade in line with, and REO recovery ahead of, targets for this point in the ramp-up schedule.
• As at the end of the period, construction of Phase 1 of the LAMP was 98% complete and pre-commissioning test-packs were more than 85% complete. Lynas is on track for first feed to kiln in Q2, subject to the issuance of the TOL.

Operating Licence on Lynas Rare Earths Plant in Malaysia Still Hangs

And so it goes. The issuance of the controversial temporary operating licence (TOL) for the Malaysian rare earths processing plant of Lynas Corp. continues to hang.

On Tuesday night, the Atomic Energy Licencing Board (AELB), the agency that granted the highly controversial TOL to the Australian rare earths producer, said it had received instructions from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MoSTI) to defer the actual release of the licence pending its decision on an appeal filed before the ministry.

PSC chairman Datuk Seri Mohammed Khaled Nordin said that once tabled, lawmakers in the lower house are expected to debate the report on June 19.

The next Dewan Rakyat meeting begins on June 11.

GREEN LIGHT starting with MONDAY'S MEETINGS: The Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) met with the AELB, and also separately with the PSC, on MAY 21.

"KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili has ordered the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) to respond over issues raised by residents appealing against the nuclear regulator’s decision to award Lynas Corp a licence for its controversial rare earths plant."

The science, technology and innovation minister said that the (AELB) board has been ordered to comment and respond on these issues by May 31, he wrote in a letter dated May 15.

The article also clarifies the roles of the Malaysia governments remaining steps in the LAMP approval process:

1) AELB reviews citizens complaints and takes input from scientific advisory sources as to whether the Appeal has certain grounds for health and environmental concerns.

2) PSC takes input from 3 residents and evaluates whether the all health and safety issues and licensing issues are fully accounted for in the AELB regulatory mechanism (but NOT whether their assessment is right or wrong, just whether it is complete).

3) AELB reports back to Ongkili as to whether the citizens grounds have merit regarding health and environmental concerns (WE NOW HAVE A DEADLINE OF MAY 31 FOR THIS).

4) Ongkili takes AELB's report and thereupon makes decision on the Appeal from the citizens (REJECTING APPEAL)

5) Once appeal is rejected, AELB board IS FREE TO DECIDE WHETHER TO NOW ISSUE LICENSE to Lynas (Temporary Operating License) if all requirements are met. They can do that or wait for PSC report, their option; however, PSC is very positive on LAMP and chairman says "LAMP is safest plant in the world."

6) Independent of Step 5, the PSC reports to parliament on the results of their collection of feedback from the public, information from world experts on plant safety obtained from the rare earth international conference, and any other sources they have employed to evaluate whether the LAMP approval process has considered all necessary factors. (Extra step, but in any case will happen by June 19.)

RMB May Month-in-Review: Rare Earth Market Averages Down 15.45%, Buying Opportunities Abound

I just finished the Vancouver Cambridge House Show and I have to say - I loved it. Many were complaining of 'dismal' attendance from the retail audience, but here's what I found -- opportunity plus numerous exceptionally high net worth investors (aka "vultures") seeking deals...some people were complaining and using terms like 'hunkering down', but those that bury themselves in the sand, will not be seen...

Many of us saw our portfolio values dwindle, so I thought I would compare share prices from start of month to end (May 1, 2012 with share prices on May 31, 2012) and quantify the damages. We got a downward average of 15.45% for RareMetalBlog sponsors. Molycorp declined 29.96% from USD$28.10 at month open and closed at USD$19.68 versus LYNAS whose decline was only 5% -- from AUD$1.10, closing at $1.045...clearly shareholders anticipate the Malaysian processing facility will open soon?

En route to Vegas for another rare earth investment conference in an hour, I will let you know what the consensus is. So here's my highlights for May, with the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Neo Material Technologies Inc. (TSX: NEM) standing out as one of the most memorable events of the month. Held in Toronto on May 30, 2012, it was really a walk down memory lane for the rare earth industry. On the same day we posted a piece called, “The Best Rare Earth Company in the World” -- it gives a summary of the AGM and an overview of the evolution of Neo Material Technologies.

News about Lynas Corporation Ltd. (ASX: LYC) also continued to permeate the headlines in May. Lynas wins Malaysian appeal

Lynas Corporation Limited (ASX:LYC) has received approval by Malaysian authorities for a temporary operating licence for its advanced minerals plant.

Lynas says the decision reflects it has complied with Malaysian and international standards.

With the temporary licence now granted, the rare earths developer should be track for first feed to kiln in the second quarter.

Lynas Corporation booked a net loss of $38.5 million in the first half of its 2012 financial year.

Here are some facts with regards to the Radiation and the Lynas controversy:

Thoriun-232 is the only weakly radioactive element found in the Lynas waste product.

Thorium-232 decay produces only alpha particles which can be stopped by a piece of thin paper and cannot penetrate even the outer layer of the human skin, whereas potassium-40 in our normal diet produces the highly dangerous gamma and beta rays from all the 3 types of beta decay, i.e. electron emission, electron capture and positron emission.

A typical 5.5 MeV alpha particle can be expected to travel less than 0.005 cm in body fluids.

THE LONGER THE HALF-LIFE OF A SUBSTANCE THE LESS IS THE RADIOACTIVITY and as such the less dangerous it is.

As a simple analogy, if it takes 14,000,000,000 years for half of a house to be burnt, there is no chance of anybody getting hurt. But if it takes only 14 minutes for half of the house to be burnt down, a lot of people will be injured or killed.

Thorium-232 which is the only significant radioactive element found in the Lynas waste has an incredibly long half-life of 14 billion years and as such is much less radioactive than the Potassium-40 whose half-life is only 1.25 billion years.

Comparison of Radioactivity in Bq (number of atoms decaying in 1second)

Pure Thorium-232 = 4,080 Bq/gm
Pure Potassium-40 = 254,000 Bq/gm
Naturally Occurring Potassium (3 different isotopes) in our body and food = 31.825 Bq/gm
Artificially created Plutonium-238 = 634,000,000,000 Bq/gm (1/2 life=87.7 years)
Lynas Rare Earth Waste = 6 Bq/gm

It has been estimated that in the worst case scenario, the radiation risk from the Lynas plant is only 0.002 mSv/yr.
In Ramsar, Iran, the naturally occurring radiation
is extremely high at 260 mSv/yr. This is 13,000,000%higher than the expected worse case scenario in Kuantan.

And the people in Ramsar, Iran has been found to be healthier and live longer than the rest of the Iranians! There is also no increase in the number of cancer cases.

In the south western area of Kerala state in India, the Thorium-232 in the soil is as high as 4,000 parts per million as compared to the Lynas waste which has only 1,650 parts per million.

And studies have shown that the population which have been living all their lives in these areas, do not have a higher incidence of cancer and their blood and tissues do not have a significant increase in the level of Thorium.

We are exposed to radiation all our lives. In fact we get 4,400 Bq of radiation from the Potassium-40 with a further 3,000 Bq from Carbon-14 which forms part of our body tissues.

There is no way we can escape completely from radiation. Even outer space is full of radiation. The only way we can escape from all radiation is to leave this universe! or jump into the Kuantan River and be eaten by the crocodiles.
Come to think about it, this would not work either as human body as well as the croc’s body have their own intrinsic radioactivity!

Thorium-232 In Clay Soil Cannot Get Into Body Tissues

1. Ingestion

Thorium-232 is strongly bound (adsorbed) by soil especially clay soil. The Thorium concentration in the clay particles is about 500,000 % higher than in the water between the clay particles.

So, it cannot be leached out by water and pollute the rivers. Even if the clay soil is washed into the rivers and sea it will not do any harm as the thorium will still be strongly attached (adsorbed) to the clay and will not dissolve into the water.

When ingested there is insignificant absorption of the Thorium because of this strong bond between the clay particles and the Thorium. Practically all the Thorium will be excreted in the faeces with the clay.

Even when Thorium-232 is in the gut, it cannot do any significant harm as a typical 5.5 MeV alpha particle can be expected to travel less than 0.005 cm in body fluids, or much less in the semi-solid faeces.

That may be why, there is not a single well documented case of accidentally or environmentally ingested or inhaled Thorium-232 induced cancer in the intestines.

2. Inhalation

Because of its mass, Thorium-232 particles are very heavy and has great difficulty to get airborne.

Normally these particles get airborne only when they are very small and the only ones that can get deep into the lungs are those which are about 1 to 2 micron in diameter.

These fine particles are only found in the mines and experimental nuclear plants where powerful machines are used or where there is combustion. The chance of inhaling1 to 2 micron sized thorium particles in the Kuantan air is practically non-existent.

All lung disorders are associated with prolonged exposure in the mines or Thorium refining plants where the above conditions are present.

Thorium-232 produces only alpha rays (gamma rays from daughter isotopes are insignificant) which cannot pass through even a thin piece of paper or the surface of the skin.

If you have a lump of pure Thorium-232, all you need to do is to wrap it up in newspaper and that will stop all the alpha radiation from getting out!

Since alpha radiation cannot go far, even if you have a huge pile of Lynas waste, the external radiation would not increase by much because only the tiny percentage of thorium-232 atoms directly on the surface of the pile will be able to radiate out their alpha particles. Those just below the surface will remain inside the pile and be converted to simple helium gas.

The radiation of 6 bq/gm from the weakly radioactive Thorium-232 in the Lynas waste is so low that even IAEA do not consider it significant and as such can be transported without any special permission.

Moreover, Thorium-232 is not a Carcinogen (cancer causing agent) if Inhaled or Ingested according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer IARC.

Thorium-232 is considered to be a carcinogen only IF ADMINISTERED INTRAVENOUSLY AS A COLLOIDAL DISPERSION OF THORIUM-232 DIOXIDE.

It was claimed that a 20 year study in one of the largest rare earth mine, the Bayun Obo mine has shown that inhalation Thorium has proven to cause lung cancer. The number of miners in 2001 were 6,983 of which 3016 were exposed to dense dust in the mine.

After correcting for the heavy smoking, there was an excess of 10 cases of lung cancer in workers who had worked for about 30 years or so in the mine.

But this study cannot exclude crystalline silica (SiO2) in the dust as being the cause of the lung cancers. Silica is a confirmed carcinogen while Thorium by inhalation or ingestion is not.

AND MOREOVER, KUANTAN PEOPLE ARE NOT RARE EARTH OR THORIUM MINERS!

The rare earth miners in the case of the Lynas Rare Earth Plant are still in a place called Mount Weld in Western Australia!

If there is any long term lung problem, the Australians are the ones who will be getting those problems and not the Kuantan people.

Kuantan people are just ordinary traders, office workers, taxi drivers or just hanging around doing nothing in the air-conditioned malls.

It is tantamount to claiming that since workers in the granite quarries and underground tin mines developed severe lung disease (silicosis) and lung cancer from inhaling dust containing silica (sand), the millions of tons of sand in our beaches should be relocated to somewhere safe or shipped back to…?Australia.

Definite evidence that crystalline silica (Sand, Sio2) is associated with an increased rate of lung cancer led the International Agency for Research on
Cancer (IARC) to conclude in 1997 that crystalline silica is a known human
carcinogen.

There is also a fear that the waste will be dumped all over the place. Unfortunately, this risk also apply to all our factories and plants. Should we demand that all our factories and plants to be closed down so that we can go back to the good old days of tapping rubber and plucking coconuts for the BIG WHITE MAN?

And what about other pollution and/or radiation sources in the environment before Lynas even starts. For example, a 1,000MW coal plant after just 1 year of operation produces 6,000,000 tons of CO2, 44,000 tons of SO2, 22,000 tons of NO2, 320,000 tons of ash containing 400 tons of heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead etc.) and, here’s the kicker, including 5 tons or Uranium and 12 tons of Thorium from which the radon gas of both decay chains are out the chimney and into our air… and we are building TWO of these now to add to those we already have on the peninsula.

3. External Threat

Thorium-232 produces only alpha rays (gamma rays from daughter isotopes are insignificant) which cannot pass through even a thin piece of paper or the surface of the skin.

Even a giant lump of Thorium-232 containing material will radiate alpha particles only from the tiny amount of Thorium-232 atoms on it’s surface as all the alpha particles produced by those inside the lump cannot penetrate even a couple of centimetres, so even if we have a small mountain of material containing Thorium-232, it makes not much difference
.
A simple newspaper wrapping would stop all alpha radiation from a lump of Thorium-232.

Someone claimed that although Thorium-232 may not be dangerous, all their “daughter” isotopes have very short half-lives like Radon-220 and these are highly radioactive, so how could we say that Thorium-232 is not dangerous.

Well, the reason is obvious. But I find great difficulty in explaining to the layman the reason why when an element with an extremely long half-life that decays into isotopes with very short half-life, there is minimal accumulation of the short half-life isotopes and as such do not build up into a large enough quantity to pose any significant hazard.

I will try to explain by this simple analogy.
If there are 2 million people waiting outside a stadium and 1 million people managed to get into the stadium after 14,000,000,000 years (half-life of Thorium-232), it means that you will see only 1 person getting into the stadium every 14,000 years.

But once in the stadium the half-life of the new person (half-life of Radon-220 from the Thorium-232 decay chain is only 55 seconds) is so short when compared with those outside (Thorium-232) that he has left the stadium almost immediately. Getting in is extremely slow but getting out is extremely fast!

Since only 1 person gets into the stadium every 14,000 years, if you look into the stadium you will see it as empty most of the time!
It is just like trying to fill up a bucket by a slow, slow drop by drop drip and the bucket has a big hole at the bottom. If you look into the bucket you will see practically little or no water in it!
Since the Lynas waste product has only 6 Bq/gm of radioactivity, the chance of detecting any significant amount of radon gas is pretty slim indeed.

4.Unnatural Routes of Entry

The only way Thorium can gain entry into the body is by injection. In the past where huge doses of 25cc to 50 cc of a 25%solution of Thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) was injected into the vein for contrast radiological studies, a very small number of patients were believed to have developed cancers 20 to 30 years later. Even with these extremely high unnatural doses, there was no acute toxicity.

In the south of the state of Kerala in India the soil contains as much as 4,000 ppm (parts of Thorium per million). Studies have shown that there is little or no accumulation of Thorium-232 in the inhabitants.

The Lynas waste contains only 1,650 ppm.

Over the last 45 years since I developed a special interest in nuclear medicine and particle physics, I have not come across any well documented and well proven report of any human being severely injured or killed by accidental or environmental inhalation or ingestion of Thorium-232.

We need to compare this with the 15,000 people murdered in the USA every year and the 2 to 3 million people killed by Malaria worldwide yearly!

So if Thorium cannot enter the body in significant amounts by ingestion or inhalation and alpha rays do not pose an external threat, what’s all the big fuss about the Lynas rare earth plant ?

5. Australians building Giant Rare Earth Plant in Australia:

It should also be noted that Australians are delighted that a company called Arafura is building a huge Rare Earth Processing Plant costing over A$1 Billion in Whyalla in South Australia.

This plant is expected to produce over 1,000 high paying jobs for the Australians.

Arafura must be hoping that we are stupid enough to stop Lynas and stop competing with them.

Remember the Tin slags from the Eastern Smelting and Straits Trading in Penang ? These, which contain the tantalum and monazite ore, and the monazite ore can be more than 3,700 % more radioactive than the Lynas waste.

And these radioactive tin slags were used to fill up the old Penang Stadium and the roads in Penang. A lot of these has already been stolen and sold off at a huge profit, but a lot still remains in the roads in Butterworth and Penang island.

The people in Penang have not developed Cancer so far as a result of these slags!

China Plans Rare-Earth Trading Platform

BEIJING—China's largest rare-earth producer plans to launch a trading platform, according to a company newsletter, in the nation's latest attempt to exert more control over the pricing of the strategically important minerals.

Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare-Earth (Group) Hi-Tech Co., 600111.SH +2.61% China's largest producer by output, plans to launch the physical-trading platform Aug. 8, it said on its website in an in-house company news report dated Friday. Baotou is leading about 10 major Chinese rare-earth producers to set up the platform, it said.

Baotou officials didn't respond to a call for comment. The newsletter's contents were reported in Chinese media on Thursday.

The market for rare earths is largely opaque because they aren't sold in public markets and move in small volumes, and only a few private-sector and government sources provide pricing data. A trading platform could provide some clarity, but if successful it could also give a China-based entity a role on determining rare-earth prices.

China controls about 95% of the world's rare-earth production, and its attempts to restrict exports have become the basis of a trade complaint by the U.S., Europe and Japan at the World Trade Organization. Rare-earth minerals are used in products ranging from consumer electronics to batteries to defense systems.

Last month, the U.S. Trade Representative said the Obama administration remains "deeply troubled" over China's restrictions on the exports of rare earths and is deciding on its next course of action after concluding consultations with Beijing through the WTO.

Even as it contends with a brewing trade dispute, China has struggled with plummeting rare-earth prices as global demand has weakened in the past year. Prices have nearly halved from last year's level for such bellwether minerals as neodymium oxide—which in 2011 averaged $132.06 a metric ton—data from Australian rare-earth miner Lynas Corp. LYC.AU -7.22% showed.

China tries to influence prices through export quotas. However, Chinese exporters used up only 62% of last year's quota due to weaker demand. Industry websites show only about a quarter of this year's initial quota has been used.

The exchange represents the latest of China's efforts to exert more control over the pricing of major industrial commodities. China launched a physical-trading platform for iron ore in May, although the exchange's data show it has been thinly used so far. China has also expressed continued interest in setting up a market for oil futures to rival those that determine benchmark crude prices in New York and London.

The rare-earth exchange will be located in Baotou city in China's northern region of Inner Mongolia, home to nearly half the world's light rare-earth output.

Wenn Lynas nicht klagen würde wäre es IMHO mit solchen Falschmeldungen, Verleumdungen usw. sicher weitergegangen.
Da stellt sich bei mir immer wieder die Frage wer steckt gegen besseren Wissens hinter diesen ganzen Falschmeldungen usw. und warum mit welchem Ziel wird das von wem betrieben??

The Kuantan High Court has granted the ‘Save Malaysia Stop Lynas’ (SMSL, an “NGO”), an interim stay for its request to repeal the Temporary Operating License (TOL) that Lynas was granted last August. Indeed, Judge Mariana Yahya has temporarily suspended the TOL until the High Court makes its final decision next October 4. SMSL presented its latest judicial applications against Lynas on August 28, asking the Court to “revoke the temporary operating licence granted by the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) on 30th January to the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) on the ground that no detailed environmental impact assessment (DEIA) was done and that a fresh radiological impact assessment and a radioactive waste management plan should have been submitted to AELB for approval before the TOL was granted”. SMSL has also asked the Court to “review the decision of the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation not to revoke the Lynas temporary operating licence”. In July, it should be noted, a Court found the same SMSL to be guilty of defamation and its alarmism lacking in any scientific basis and at the end of last August the Malaysian government granted Lynas the TOL. On 26 September, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur will hear from SMSL, who are defendants in the Lynas defamation case.

Das führt IMHO dazu, dass die vielen illegalen Minen in China noch alle versuchen ihre Produktionsmargen auf den
Internationalen Märkten, koste es was es wolle, los zu werden, was u.a. auch die Preisrücksetzer für REO erklärt.

Wenn die chinesische Regierung weiter so gegen diese illegalen REO-Produzenten in ihrem Land vorgeht sind diese Billiganbieter schnell erschöpft und der Preis für die REO werden sich dann IMHO auf ein Niveau erhöhen das sich für dann für die legalen REO-Produzenten rechnet.

LYNAS WORKERS “EXPOSED”



My first day working for Lynas Corporation some years ago began with a massive feeling of interest and anticipation.

Here was a company starting out, doing what few had done before in an industry that was hugely important to the future world. Its vision was to produce a product that was vital but still relatively unknown to all of us and certainly a mystery to me despite my mining and manufacturing background.

I did my research. Wow, Rare Earths. The modern world is addicted to them but almost totally unaware of their origin and capabilities.

What’s not to like about a company that is producing a product to enhance the environment, provide digital technology smaller and more technically advanced, and improve the efficiency of our energy reserves? If I wanted a “green” company to work for, I could not have done better! Sure, they dig stuff out of the ground to produce these marvelous products but the world is full of companies that mine and make products that contribute to the world’s pollution.

Further roadblocks to the operation of the Australia-owned Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) in Gebeng, Pahang, will trigger lowering of investor confidence and slow the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into Malaysia to levels seen during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-2009.


Malaysia’s FDI inflow fell from RM23.4 billion in 2008 to a mere RM4.43 billion in 2009 as a result of the financial crisis which also placed the country in the red for the first time in 15-years.

Lynas Corporation (ASX:LYC, OTC:LYSDY) is pleased to announce that the Kuantan High Court has denied an application by parties associated with the Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) group (Applicants) for an injunction against Lynas’ Temporary Operating Licence (TOL). The injunction application was referred to in Lynas’ ASX announcement dated October 10, 2012.

Lynas is also pleased to announce that the Kuantan High Court has ordered that Lynas be added as a party to the application by the Applicants for a judicial review of the decision of the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation to dismiss an appeal under the Atomic Energy Licensing Act against the Atomic Energy Licensing Board’s decision to approve the TOL. The judicial review application was referred to in Lynas’ ASX announcement dated October 4, 2012.

The hearing of the judicial review application is expected in a few months time. Both the Malaysian government and Lynas intend to strongly defend the process undertaken by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation in dismissing the appeal under the Atomic Energy Licensing Act. There is no injunction or stay preventing Lynas from carrying out its operations at its Malaysian plant.

Residents confident rare earth plant safe

KUANTAN - HOLDING samples of rare earth in their hands, residents from several villages here displayed smiles of confidence on their safety.

This took place during a briefing of rare earth refining operations at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant in Gebeng here yesterday.

For Siti Aminah Talib, 58, from Balok Baru, Gebeng, there were no more doubts.

"All the representatives from nearby villages here are full of confidence on the safety aspects of the Lamp operation," she said, as other representatives nodded at the briefing site which was near the place where containers of rare earth are kept.

"We are fully satisfied with the briefing on the nature of the Lynas operations and the explanation on the negligible amount of radioactivity contained in the lanthanide samples."

She described the briefing given by Lynas officials as "clear and concise".

"We were given a clear picture of what goes on inside Lamp," she said and added she had no more doubts on how safe the rare earth elements were.

Dismissing the talk by the opposition on the dangers of rare earth, she said that it was hard to understand why they insisted on harping on something that clearly poses no danger to the surrounding community.

Abdullah Umar, 78, who used to work at the Kuantan Port, felt the opposition was making an unnecessarily big issue out of Lamp's rare earth operation.

"This whole matter is really a non-issue. It has been blown out of proportion by certain political parties," said the resident of Kg Balok Sejahtera here while holding in his right hand a sample of lanthanide given to him during the demonstration on the safety of the rare earth samples.

Former Kuantan district office technician Abdul Mukhtar Ngah, 56, said that he had always known that the rare earth operation at Lamp would not pose a threat to residents and the environment in Gebeng or anywhere else.

Menurutnya, keputusan itu dibuat dalam mesyuarat AELB dalam Isnin lalu. "TOL ini akan membolehkan Lynas sebagai percubaan mengilang bahan mentah pekatan lanthanid secara berperingkat dan terhad serta dikawalselia secara berterusan oleh agensi penguatkuasa AELB," kata kenyataan Setiausaha Eksekutif AELB, Raja Datuk Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan (foto) hari ini. Menurutnya, AELB dalam mesyuaratnya pada 30 Januari 2012 telah memutuskan agar permohonan TOL syarikat Lynas (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Lynas), diluluskan tertakluk kepada beberapa syarat. "Walau bagaimanapun, TOL tidak dikeluarkan kerana Lynas perlu mematuhi syarat tambahan yang dibuat di bawah Akta 304 dan perundangan subsidiarinya," tambahnya. Menurutnya, AELB dalam mesyuaratnya pada hari Isnin lalu, telah berpuashati bahawa Lynas telah mematuhi semua aspek teknikal, termasuk kaedah kawalan debu serta imobilisasi bahan radioaktif dalam residu, dan keperluan perundangan yang ditetapkan. "Lembaga juga mengambil maklum bahawa Lynas telah membuat komitmen untuk membawa residu Water Leach Purification (WLP) yang terhasil dalam projek LAMP keluar daripada Malaysia dalam bentuk produk komersial. MALAYSIAN APPEAL DISMISSED

Lynas Corporation (ASX:LYC, OTC:LYSDY) is pleased to announce that Lynas and the Malaysian government have been successful in defending another challenge by persons associated with the Save Malaysia Stop Lynas (SMSL) group (Applicants) to Lynas’ Temporary Operating Licence (TOL).

The Malaysian Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal with costs in favour of Lynas against the Kuantan High Court’s decision to deny an application for an injunction against the TOL pending a judicial review hearing in 2013. The Kuantan High Court’s decision was referred to in Lynas’ ASX announcement dated 8 November 2012. The appeal of that decision was referred to in Lynas’ ASX announcements dated 15 November 2012 and 7 December 2012.

The judicial review application, which was referred to in Lynas’ ASX announcement dated 8 November 2012, is scheduled to be heard by the Kuantan High Court on 5 February 2013. Both the Malaysian government and Lynas intend to strongly defend the process undertaken by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation in dismissing the appeal under the Atomic Energy Licensing Act.

There is no injunction or stay preventing Lynas from carrying out its operations at its Malaysian plant.

Lynas ramps up rare earth processing in Malaysia

Australia’s Lynas Corporation yesterday commissioned its controversial rare earth plant in Malaysia.

The first delivery of commercial rare earth product is expected in the next few weeks.

In a statement released yesterday Lynas said they have successfully begun cracking and leaching rare earth extraction units and production will continue to ramp up over the next three to four months.

This is another significant milestone for Lynas,” said Lynas executive chairman Nicholas Curtis.

Following the announcement the company’s shares rose 14 per cent.

It was a good day for rare earth companies around the world yesterday with Molycorp and Great Western Minerals also seeing their share prices rise by 9.8 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.

At full production Molycorp, Lynas and Great Western are expected to end China's grip on the rare earth market of which China currently controls more than 95 per cent of the global supply, mining.com reported.

In November Australian Mining reported Lynas had received its first shipment of about 100 containers of rare earth concentrate at the Malaysian plant. At the time the company expected the first kiln feed to take place just a couple of days later.

However, the company has been embroiled in legal action launched by the Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas group which aimed to block Lynas from acquiring a temporary operating licence for the new facility.

“The safe and efficient operation of the LAMP is now a reality, and we are providing real-time data that assures people the LAMP is entirely safe for our local communities and the environment,” Curtis said.

Protests took place outside the company’s Sydney head office in November last year amid concerns from the Greens that radio active waste produced at the Malayasian plant would be shipped back to Australia.

2.- fordert China genau das Gegenteil!
3.- belegen alle internationale Studien, dass China bei der technischen Entwicklung, der Energie- und Umweltproblematik in der sich China immer mehr befinden wird, in ein paar Jahren auf Importe von REO angewiesen sind.

Was würde beim Gegenteil passieren was ja immer wieder IMHO unsinniger Weise behauptet wird?

Den Weltmarkt mit Dumpingpreise zu fluten würde vor allen Dingen dazu führen das die 23% Reserven die China nur noch besitzt noch schneller verbraucht sein werden, keine REO abhängige Produkte ins Land locken kann, ihre REO-Produzenten mit Milliarden subventionieren muss und dazu
billige ausländische Produkte importieren muss die China durch Dumpingpreise subventioniert hat was in China zusätzlich noch viele Arbeitsplätze kosten würde einhergehend mit Knoff hoff Verlust durch wegbleiben auswärtiger Globalplayer die ansonsten in China produzieren würden.

Kurz gesagt, China würde damit einen Teufelskreislauf in eigener Regie auslösen.


Zusätzlich würden alle auswärtigen REO-Produzenten und die es mal werden wollen pleite gehen die Gläubiger und Aktionäre wären damit faktisch enteignet und die Insolvenzverwalter würden billigst an clevere Großinvestoren verkaufen müssen die dann mit den Bereits erschlossenen Minen und Produktionsanlagen billigst REO produzieren können und so auch für den Rest der chinesischen REO-Produzenten konkurrieren können bis China die letzten Reserven ausgebeutet hat und was dann?

Kann das im Interesse von China sein?

Metalle werden unter Schwankungen immer teuerer werden müssen, solange, bis eine neue nachhaltige Energiewirtschaft es ermöglichen wird, auch die magersten Erze noch umweltverträglich zu fördern. Derzeit verlässt sich die globale Wirtschaft noch immer zu ca. 90% auf die klarer Weise zur Neige gehenden fossilen Energien.

Der Aufbau einer solchen nachhaltigen Energiewirtschaft selbst wird jedoch Unmengen an Rohstoffen verschlingen: Kupfer und Silber für die Smartgrids, Stahl, Seltene Erden für die Windturbinen, Indium für Solarmodule, und so weiter und so weiter … China hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, bis 2030 20% seiner Energieversorgung aus nachhaltigen Quellen zu decken und kauft daher weltweit die hierfür benötigten Rohstoffe auf, wo es sie bekommt. Es fördert im eigenen Land so schnell und so viel Gold wie es nur kann, um sich diese Quellen auch zukünftig erschliessen zu können (Chinas Jahresförderung ist mit großem Abstand weltweit die prozentual größte bezogen auf die ausgewiesenen Reserven). Während hier also eine klare Strategie zu erkennen ist, verwaltet die alte Welt nur ihr zunehmendes Siechtum von Wahl zu Wahl, ohne langfristige Strategie oder Richtung.

A milestone was reached by Lynas Corporation last Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at the company’s Lynas Advanced Materials’ Plant, known as the LAMP, when the plant’s solvent-extraction (SX) system produced the first results of its initial run, 200 kg of SEG (samarium-europium-gadolinium) carbonate. The next day La-Ce (lanthanum-cerium) mixed carbonates were delivered by the system. Finally the system will deliver – and may have already delivered – mixed neodymium-praseodymium carbonate, also known as didymium in the rare-earth trade. The system is designed to produce 30 tonnes a day of products when operating at full capacity. It was announced that the system will be capable of running at full capacity by June 30, 2013; it was also announced that Phase II of the system, an additional 11,000 metric tons per year of capacity, will be in operation by Sep 30, 2013.

The campaign (the length of time from loading the plant with a mixed concentrate to the delivery of the designed product(s)) was 90 days, I was told. The sequence in which the product(s) come out is due to a process-flow design that maximizes the separation and minimizes the time required to carry it out. LAMP takes mechanically beneficiated ore concentrates from Australia, roasts them and then extracts the rare-earth elements (REEs). It then converts them to a chemical salts solution, which is then fed into the solvent-extraction (SX) system to separate the individual rare earths into chosen combinations or individual elements according to customer specifications.

Lynas now announces that the Conversion Price under the Convertible Bond Deed Poll has been adjusted to A$1.15

Bei allem geht es sicher auch darum, dass man von seinen Investments profitiert aber noch wichtiger ist IMHO das man sein Geld dort einsetzt wo es für alle und gerade auch in Bezug auf zukünftige Generationen, einen Nutzen hat.
Leider handeln immer noch viele nach dem Motto "Nach mir die Sintflut"

Daher möchte ich diesen Bericht (Sendung) allen die sie auch versäumt haben ans Herz legen bzw. diesen Link zum nachhaltigen anschauen zurücklegen.

FOR THE PERIOD ENDING 30 JUNE 2013

HIGHLIGHTS

By early June 2013, Lynas achieved nameplate production capacity in the cracking and leaching units of Phase 1 of the LAMP. Subsequently, the Company has identified some clogging and premature wearing of equipment that is affecting its ability to maintain this production rate in the cracking and leaching units. A series of work programs involving equipment changes and materials handling to allow the cracking and leaching units to operate continuously at nameplate production capacity have and will continue to be implemented. None of these programs involve significant capital investments and are expected to be in place over the coming months.
 Total tonnes produced for the quarter were 144 tonnes, on an REO equivalent basis, and total tonnes shipped were 117 tonnes, on an REO equivalent basis. Several of the Company’s products have now been qualified by customers. For other customers, the qualification process remains ongoing in part due to the customer specification process timeline.
 Since the commencement of LAMP operations in November 2012, the measured emissions on site have consistently been significantly lower than the regulatory limits.
 In response to challenging Rare Earths market conditions, the Company has taken a number of steps to strengthen its position during this subdued period, and in turn, be ready to respond to improved market conditions. As previously announced, the Company has decided to optimise its production levels at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) at the Phase 1 capacity level of 11,000 tonnes per annum REO until market prices recover. Subsequent to the end of the quarter, there is emerging evidence of improved supply-side discipline in China resulting in higher offer prices for Rare Earths products. The Company will continue with the commissioning of the Phase 2 expansion of the LAMP ahead of an expected start-up in Q3 2013. The subsequent ramp up of Phase 2 production will be determined by various factors, primarily being market conditions.
 In the current environment, a key focus of management is on cost savings, both operational and at the corporate level. These cost savings programs remain ongoing and have already delivered benefits through the more optimised use of Group shared services and the deferral of discretionary operating and capital expenditure. Management will continue to explore ways to further optimise the Group’s cost base and minimise its working capital requirements. Lynas remains committed to being a global leader in the supply of Rare Earths and its sustainability-based business model; one that is safe for people, safe for the environment and secure for customers.
 The Company had $125.7m of unrestricted available cash on hand as at 30 June 2013.
 The 12-month rolling Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate for Lynas’ global operations (employees and contractors) as at the end of June 2013 was 0.9.
