MediGene has made good progress since its June IPO. New technologies have been added to its heart disease programme, its vaccine against pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix has entered clinical trials, and the proposed acquisition of NeuroVir will significantly bolster the company’s cancer franchise. ComSec continues to expect strong news flow and initiates coverage with a BUY and a €€120 price target.Disease focus. MediGene is developing innovative products and technology platforms focused on heart disease, cancer and diseases caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infections. Its unique genomics technology platform could lead to breakthrough treatments for congestive heart failure and other heart conditions. In cancer, it is developing two innovative vaccine-based technologies.Heart disease. Since June, several technology co-operations have been signed in its heart disease programme, giving MediGene access to new bioinformatics systems as well as nucleic acid and protein chips. These complement its strong array of technologies which ComSec believes to be at the cutting edge of gene discovery, target evaluation and target validation. MediGene’s first cardiovascular product Etomoxir is scheduled to enter phase 2 next year and has ‘blockbuster’ potential.Cancer vaccines. The company has already established two major partnership deals in cancer - one with Schering AG (SCHG.F, €€67, ACCUMULATE) and another with Aventis (AVEP.PA, €€86, HOLD) – which could have a combined value of around €€90m (excluding royalties), substantially validating its vaccine platforms.Acquisition bolsters cancer franchise. The proposed acquisition of NeuroVir will fit well with MediGene’s already-strong position in cancer, broadening its pipeline by the addition of two clinical products and reducing risk. It also gives the company a foothold in the US.Breakeven in 2004? ComSec continues to expect MediGene to reach breakeven in 2004 - even after the proposed acquisition of NeuroVir. This is based on its expectation that MediGene will out-license one of NeuroVir’s cancer drugs in 2002 and that the partner will fund the ongoing R&D costs of the programme.

Palim, palim!
Halte zwar sehr viel von Medigene und habe sie auch im Depot, aber bei der oben aufgeführten Empfehlung ist zu beachten, daß diese von einer der Emissionsbanken stammt.
