Stocks Stagger As Wall Street Weighs Data
By Denise Duclaux
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks staggered around unchanged in early morning trading on Friday as Wall Street weighed a jump in a key consumer confidence gauge against a drop in a regional measure of manufacturing activity.
The University of Michigan`s final consumer sentiment index, which measures American consumers` attitudes on the economy and their current financial picture, rose to 91.5 from 90.6 in February. That snapped a three-month decline, which may signal that consumer pessimism may have touched a bottom.
``There is an improvement of sentiment in March and a rise in expectations in March and that`s good news,`` said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer at First Albany Corp.
``It suggests consumer sentiment perhaps is not deteriorating as rapidly as everybody has worried. So maybe there is a little less reason to worry about a drop-off in consumer spending,`` he said.
But the regional Chicagoland Business Barometer fell more than eight points in March to a seasonally adjusted 35.0, the lowest level since March 1982, the National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago said. An index below 50 signals a contracting manufacturing economy while a reading above 50 suggests expansion.
``The point is manufacturing is in a recession and there is no evidence of a turn,`` Johnson said. ``This is not good news.``
The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) slipped 8.40 points, or 0.46 percent, to 1,812.17. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) rose 37.76 points, or 0.39 percent, to 9,836.82. The broader Standard & Poor`s 500 Index (.SPX) rose 3.97 points, or 0.35 percent, to 1,151.92.
``There is not much you can do until that ugly bear retreats. Until then, he`s there ready to charge on any type of news,`` said Peter Cardillo, director of research for brokerage Westfalia Investments.
The first quarter has bloodied all of the leading market indexes. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial average fell about 9 percent so far, the S&P 500 dropped 13 percent and the Nasdaq composite spiraled down about 26 percent during the last three months.
