IM22: Innovation will lead the way for industrial minerals

      .....
“Growth is linked to urbanisation and a growing middle class,” she said, adding that she believed that Rio Tinto Minerals thinks demand will double in the markets it serves, or is hoping to serve (borates, minerals sands, lithium and fertilisers).

“This will increase demand for industrial minerals (...) all of which is a good outlook for our industry,” she added.

David Robb, managing director of Iluka meanwhile said that he believed growth would return to the mineral sands industry, but said that it would be in a different market to that which is recognised now.

“We believe in the industry’s future, but things will be different. We believe in our industry and we are investing in its future,” Robb said.

Robb took delegates through the company’s acquisition of Metalysis, underlining that this could “transform demand for titanium metal”.

The $20.3m acquisition of Metalysis, A UK Cambridge University spin out, was announced in the company’s 2013 results. Metalysis has developed a process that can produce rutile directly from titanium metal.

“This is a potentially disruptive technology if it is successfully commercialised,” Robb said.

      Logistics move forward

Logistics service providers to the industrial minerals industry were also eager to showcase innovation, with speakers focusing on ways to mitigate rising costs and avoid bottlenecks in the supply chain.

Rusty Safine, president of US-based FBC Logistics, said that new packaging and container options were needed to compensate for the lack of handling infrastructure at many ports, which in itself is scuppering growth, with one possible solution being the use of larger, intelligently designed bags for transporting dry bulk material.

"Are we trying to run, before we can walk with IoT?"; In the rush to eulogise the cool, shiny, sci-fi potential of the Internet of Things, are we forgetting about the infrastructure basics? Ben Thompson investigate - MtB.tv - Apr 11, 2014
      http://blog.meettheboss.tv/iot-are-we-trying-to-run-before-w…

"Last week I wrote about the advent of the Internet of Things and what it might mean for your business. In case you missed it, there's a great video outlining some of the key benefits here:

However, one thing we only touched upon in passing last week was the infrastructure side of things. Which, let’s face it, is pretty damn important.

It's all very well eulogising about the advantages of embedding wireless sensors into a herd of cattle in order to monitor their health, or how to get an extra five minutes in bed based on traffic reports, or how to meet your fitness goals through a digital personal trainer that knows, like Santa, whether you’ve been naughty or nice – these applications all have fantastic utility, as do the countless other productivity and efficiency enhancing IoT-based tools out there.

But all that cool, shiny Jetsons-type stuff all needs to run on something robust, secure and scalable. And getting the network architectures right – both at the physical and logical layer – is where the challenge lies for most firms. With apologies to Tony Stark, you can't always run before you can walk.

Not  only must the physical infrastructure be able to support the requirements of the Internet of Things, it must perfectly align   to the logical network design, too. In layman’s terms, your architecture has to map    to your intended services.

“All the advantages are going to have to be facilitated by how we architect those networks and how we manage them,” suggested Jack Tison, CTO at technology infrastructure giant Panduit, in an interview with MeetTheBoss TV this week (due for broadcast in mid-April). “IoT’s got a big upside but I believe right now it’s a little ill-defined and probably a little off-putting for some folks.”

Indeed, refining those definitions in more meaningful terms is something firms like Panduit (along with partners Cisco and Rockwell Automation) are attempting to address, and part of that will be around providing common standards and guidance around architectural readiness for the Internet of Things.

“There’s going to be a lot of devices that don’t talk a common language,” Tison told me. “We’re going to have to manage that and there are architectures that we can put in place to do that.”

It’s an issue we’ll be covering in depth in our upcoming roundtable on preparing your infrastructure for the Internet of Things. To register your interest in taking part, please click here.

And in the meantime, check out this infographic from the Panduit, Cisco and Rockwell collaboration. If those figures are to be believed, then solving your architecural issues could be key to unlocking some pretty huge returns. We'd love to hear your thoughts.
