Fission Energy Corp.: New Ground Staked on South Flank of PLS Property

KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 15, 2012) - Fission Energy Corp. ("Fission or "the Company") (TSX VENTURE:FIS)(OTCQX:FSSIF) and its 50% Joint Venture (JV) partner ESO Uranium Corp., announce that six new claims totalling ~ 8,170 hectares (20,200 acres) have been staked along the south boundary of the PLS Property. The new staking has increased the size of the PLS Property to approximately 31,039 hectares in 17 mineral claims.

The six new claims were staked to cover possible south trending extensions of the large 5 km X 0.9 km wide high grade uranium boulder field discovered by the JV in June, 2011 (see news release dated July 27th 2011). The geological setting compares favourably with the PLS boulder field discovery area, and exhibits potential for shallow, basement hosted uranium deposits. In addition, the new claims envelop the southwest extensions of several historical basement conductors, including the Derkson Conductor Corridor, where previous exploration was conducted in the 1970s by the Saskatchewan Mining & Development Corporation (now Cameco). This area will be evaluated for uranium mineralization that may extend to the southwest from the extensive western front of the uranium boulder field.

The Joint Venture has contracted Geotech Ltd. to conduct a 1,711 line-km helicopter time-domain electromagnetic (EM) survey. This survey will provide data for interpreting the bedrock lithology, indentifying structural and alteration features, in addition to contributing high resolution images of bedrock EM conductors, which may represent graphitic zones and/or faults. All of these elements are related to the occurrence of high grade uranium mineralization found in the Athabasca Basin region. The survey is currently underway.

Drilling, as part of the JV's expanded $2.76 million exploration program at PLS (see press release dated January 16, 2012) is expected to resume later this month. Approximately 4,000m in 33 core and reverse circulation drill holes is now planned. This program is designed to locate the source area of the boulders by drilling for radioactive till sheets in the overburden on the up ice (northeast) side of the uranium boulder field, as well as testing targets identified from ground geophysics DC Resistivity and EM surveys. Details will follow once the projects are underway.

Lastly, as per the terms of the JV Agreement, Fission is now Operator and assumes management of the PLS exploration project as of January 1st 2012.

PLS is a 50%/50% Joint Venture held with ESO Uranium Corp. (ESO). PLS is accessible by road with primary access from all weather Highway 955, which runs north to the former Cluff Lake mine, (>60M lbs of U3O8 produced), and passes through the nearby UEX-Areva Shea Creek discoveries located 50km to the north, currently under active exploration and development.

The technical information in this news release has been prepared in accordance with the Canadian regulatory requirements set out in National Instrument 43-101 and reviewed on behalf of the company by Ross McElroy, P.Geol. President and COO for Fission Energy Corp., a Qualified Person.

Fission Energy among Versant Partners' 2012 top stock picks

Fission Energy (CVE:FIS) has been named one of the top picks for 2012 by capital markets firm Versant Partners, as Versant is expecting an "inevitable consolidation" from the uranium explorer.
Fission is engaged in the acquisition and exploration of uranium properties in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec in Canada, as well as the Macusani District in Peru.
Versant has a "speculative buy" rating on Fission Energy with a $1.25 price target. Tuesday, Fission shares closed up 1.3 percent at $0.78.
Fission Energy's flagship Waterbury Lake project is located immediately west of Hathor Exploration’s (TSE:HAT) Roughrider uranium deposit, which is in the heart of a district that hosts over 110 million pounds of uranium.
Hathor was recently subject to a takeover battle in late 2011 between mining giants Cameco Corp. (TSE:CCO)(NYSE:CCJ) and Rio Tinto (NYSE:RIO)(LON:RIO), with the latter emerging as the winner with its $654 million friendly bid trumping Cameco's $625 million bid.
Fission's J East Zone at Waterbury is the likely western extension of Hathor's Rougrider deposit as the property line is the only thing separating the two, Versant noted.

J East is one of several pods of mineralization along a “string of pearls” formation that runs deeper from west to east and includes Fission’s Summit, Talkiser, J Zone and J East Zones as well as Hathor’s Roughrider, Roughrider East and Far East Zones.

In a research note, Versant analyst Rob Chang said: "Fission will soon release its initial 43-101 compliant resource estimate for the [Waterbury Lake] J Zone. The resource is expected to be between 13–23 million pounds of uranium. We estimate that it will be about 18 million pounds of uranium."
In terms of consolidation, Versant Partners said that with the recently completed battle for Hathor won by Rio Tinto, it is generally believed that Hathor alone is too small to significantly impact the bottom line for the mining giant.
"As such, the consolidation of Hathor’s neighbour that has the shallower mineralization is a likely subsequent step," Versant Partners concluded.
Other companies in the below $250 million market cap range included in Versant's top picks for the year are Mawson West (TSE:MWE), MEGA Brands (TSE:MB) and QHR Technologies (CVE:QHR).

Fission Energy Corp.: Four Drill Holes Intersect Mineralization Widening J Zone in Sandstone and Basement

KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 31, 2012) - FISSION ENERGY CORP. (TSX VENTURE:FIS)(OTCQX:FSSIF) ("Fission" or the "Company") and its Limited Partner, the Korea Waterbury Uranium Limited Partnership ("the Waterbury Consortium"), announce that four infill drill holes (WAT12-221, 226, 228 and 229) have intersected several well developed and widening intervals of mineralization up to 14m in the sandstone above the unconformity and up to 17.5m in the basement, in the western part of the J Zone. Moderate to locally strong radioactivity was observed, penetrating through the sandstone above the unconformity, and extending vertically through the unconformity into the basement below. Holes WAT12-221, 226 and 228, are the first three infill holes to successfully test the gaps to the east and west of step-out Hole WAT11-209 (Line 470W), while Hole WAT12-229 was drilled immediately north of Hole WAT11-196, also in the western part of the J Zone. Overall, ten drill holes have been completed to date. Seven intersected anomalous to strongly variable radioactivity at or near the unconformity and in the basement rocks, two holes were barren, and one hole was abandoned for technical reasons. All ten infill holes have been completed in the western part of the J Zone as part of the expanded $9.28 million, 32,630m Waterbury Lake 2012 winter drill program, which recently commenced earlier this month.

Fission could be next in line for uranium M&A, says president :D

      By: Matthew Hill
      28th January 2012

Updated 3 hours agoTEXT SIZE TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian Uranium junior Fission Energy has signed confidentiality agreements with “all the major players” in the Athabasca basin, president and COO Ross McElroy told Mining Weekly Online on Friday.

The companies are interested in Fission’s Waterbury Lake deposit, located next door to Hathor Exploration’s Roughrider project, which Rio Tinto bought for C$654-million earlier this month.

TSX-V-quoted Fission on January 16 announced an initial resource at the project’s J Zone deposit of 7.4-million pounds of uranium grading at 1.99% uranium.

That is slightly higher than the grade at Roughrider which McElroy said was about two years ahead of where Fission is currently.

“We know we’re a potential takeover target... the major companies will certainly be looking at Fission as the next in line,” he commented in a telephone interview.

Analysts have speculated that Rio Tinto would buy Fission, with Versant Partners’ Rob Chang repeating this belief on Friday.

“It is likely that the mining giant will look to acquire the high-grade, shallower mineralized deposit and land package immediately west of Roughrider,” he said in a note.

Fission’s J Zone is only 30 m away from Roughrider.

On Thursday, the Kelowna, British Columbia-based company announced it was increasing its 2012 exploration budget for Waterbury Lake by 26% to C$9.28-million to accelerate the programme.

Drills will now turn at several of Fission’s high-priority regional targets, including the Summit Zone, the Oban Corridor (Oban, Oban North and Chivas), and Murphy Lake, as well as at J Zone.

The reason for the spending rise was to allow the company to test the other promising targets while not slowing down at J Zone, McElroy said.

Because the J Zone is only 30 m from Roughrider, it is “one and the same deposit in geological terms”, and it is also shallower, likely making it cheaper to mine, he added.

It could also make more sense to access the Roughrider deposit through the J Zone.

“If you’re a mining company you want to develop the whole play,” said McElroy.

Approached for comment, a Rio Tinto spokesperson said the company did not comment on market speculation or rumours.

McElroy said Fission had not yet signed a confidentiality agreement with Rio Tinto.

Fission, which was spun out of Strathmore Minerals in 2007, has gained 11% on the TSX-V so far this year, closing at C$0.79 a share on Friday.

      URANIUM PRICES

Meanwhile, McElroy said he was confident that prices for nuclear fuel would rise.

The Japanese nuclear disaster last March sent prices tumbling from nearly $70/lb to below $50/lb, though they have since stabilised at around $52.50/lb.

“We certainly believe in the strength of the sector. There is upward pressure on the price because of supply and demand issues have not gone away; they’ve just got closer in fact,” McElroy said.

An agreement between Russia and the US where uranium in former-Soviet Union warheads are downblended into fuel for power stations comes to an end in 2013, removing around 30-million pounds of supply.

Analysts have predicted strong price increases once this occurs.

McElroy said he believed uranium could reach $70/lb on the spot market this year.

Canada risks losing investment opportunities because companies are waiting years for the federal government to review natural resource projects that get far speedier approval in other countries, Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver told a Toronto audience Friday.

In a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s pledge this week to speed up approvals for major mining and energy projects, Mr. Oliver listed examples of proposals that have been waiting years for regulatory approvals, noting the Mackenzie gas pipeline project underwent reviews for nine years, while French uranium company Areva has so far spent six years seeking approval for its Midwest uranium mine in Saskatchewan.
