Fission Energy among Versant Partners' 2012 top stock picks

Fission Energy (CVE:FIS) has been named one of the top picks for 2012 by capital markets firm Versant Partners, as Versant is expecting an "inevitable consolidation" from the uranium explorer.

Fission is engaged in the acquisition and exploration of uranium properties in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec in Canada, as well as the Macusani District in Peru.

Versant has a "speculative buy" rating on Fission Energy with a $1.25 price target. Tuesday, Fission shares closed up 1.3 percent at $0.78.

Fission Energy's flagship Waterbury Lake project is located immediately west of Hathor Exploration’s (TSE:HAT) Roughrider uranium deposit, which is in the heart of a district that hosts over 110 million pounds of uranium.

Hathor was recently subject to a takeover battle in late 2011 between mining giants Cameco Corp. (TSE:CCO)(NYSE:CCJ) and Rio Tinto (NYSE:RIO)(LON:RIO), with the latter emerging as the winner with its $654 million friendly bid trumping Cameco's $625 million bid.

Fission's J East Zone at Waterbury is the likely western extension of Hathor's Rougrider deposit as the property line is the only thing separating the two, Versant noted.

J East is one of several pods of mineralization along a “string of pearls” formation that runs deeper from west to east and includes Fission’s Summit, Talkiser, J Zone and J East Zones as well as Hathor’s Roughrider, Roughrider East and Far East Zones.

In a research note, Versant analyst Rob Chang said: "Fission will soon release its initial 43-101 compliant resource estimate for the [Waterbury Lake] J Zone. The resource is expected to be between 13–23 million pounds of uranium. We estimate that it will be about 18 million pounds of uranium."

In terms of consolidation, Versant Partners said that with the recently completed battle for Hathor won by Rio Tinto, it is generally believed that Hathor alone is too small to significantly impact the bottom line for the mining giant.

"As such, the consolidation of Hathor’s neighbour that has the shallower mineralization is a likely subsequent step," Versant Partners concluded.

Other companies in the below $250 million market cap range included in Versant's top picks for the year are Mawson West (TSE:MWE), MEGA Brands (TSE:MB) and QHR Technologies (CVE:QHR).

Fission Energy update on Patterson Lake South project

Sunday, 18 Dec 2011Fission Energy announced trenching results from its Patterson Lake South joint venture in Saskatchewan, where the highest grade samples included 31.4% and 31.2% U308 (Uranium).

Assays have been received from the 49 radioactive boulders discovered during the trenching program carried out during October 2011. These boulders occur in the high grade boulder field that has been traced for a north-south length of approximately five kilometres by up to 0.9 kilometres wide.

Fission Energy also said its 1,000 metre drill program targeting shallow basement mineralization is currently underway, and results will be announced when available.

Patterson Lake South is a 50/50 joint venture with ESO Uranium. The project consists of 12 mineral claims, totaling 13,497 hectares.

Cameco warns of uranium supply deficit

      By Christopher Donville, Bloomberg News

Cameco Corp., the world's largest uranium producer, said some investors underestimate the potential for supply shortfalls to spur higher prices for the nuclear fuel.
Disruptions in mine production, the difficulty faced by development companies in raising funds for new mining projects, and the end of a Russian deal to supply uranium from scrapped atomic warheads may help create a supply deficit, chief executive Tim Gitzel said in an interview.
"People don't focus so much on the supply side," he said.
"They take every possible project, think it's going to operate to perfection, and add it up and say 'there's lots of supply,'" Gitzel said. "It's easier said than done."
Uranium prices have slumped 24 per cent since a magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami struck Japan on March 11 caused a partial meltdown at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant. The crisis at Fukushima led to Germany's declaration in May that it would close its reactors by 2022. Cameco, which is based in Saskatoon, in August cut its full-year global uranium demand estimate to 175 million pounds (79,400 metric tons) from 180 million pounds.
Investors are too caught up in a "post-Fukushima attitude," said Gitzel, 49, who became Saskatoonbased Cameco's chief executive in July, replacing Jerry Grandey, 65, who retired.
Cameco, which in 2010 produced 22.8 million pounds of U3O8 - a tradable form of uranium - still plans to raise annual output to 40 million pounds by 2018.
Cameco rose 2.8 per cent to $19.92 at 10: 58 a.m. in Toronto. It has tumbled 51 per cent in 2011, while the S&P/Toronto Stock Exchange Composite Index has dropped 8.9 per cent.
Global mined uranium supply was 53,663 tons in 2010, according to the World Nuclear Association. That's not enough to cover global demand, and so some utilities also use fuel recovered from Russian warheads under the Highly Enriched Uranium agreement, which has run since the 1990s.
Gitzel said Russia will withdraw from the HEU accord by the end of 2013, removing 24 million pounds of supply.
"There's a lot, and I spoke to some of them this week, who think the HEU agreement is still going to be around," Gitzel said. "We don't."
There are 433 operable reactors globally and 62 under construction around the world, according to the WNA. China is building 26, plans to construct another 51 and has proposed 120 others, the WNA data show. Developing nations are adding nuclear capacity to meet growing electricity demand and to diversify away from power generated from oil, gas and coal.
A gigawatt of electricity, enough to power about 1 million U.S. homes, requires 200 tons of uranium a year at full operating rates, according to the WNA. "The game's not played in Europe anymore," said Gitzel, who ran French nuclear company Areva SA's global mining business before joining Cameco in 2007. "The game is played in Asia. China's barely blinked post Fukushima."
Although Germany plans to phase out nuclear power, there will be a net 93 new reactors by the end of the decade, Gitzel said. That compares with Cameco's projection prior to the Japanese earthquake and tsunami of as many as 104, he said.
Cameco is assessing potential takeover targets after it was trumped by Rio Tinto Group's $654 million takeover bid for Vancouver-based Hathor Exploration Ltd. Hathor is the developer of the Roughrider uranium deposit in the Athabasca basin in Saskatchewan, the centre of Cameco's operations. Cameco allowed its hostile offer for Hathor to expire last week.
"We're always looking, we're cashed up very nicely, and we have a solid balance sheet," Gitzel said. Cameco is willing to look at potential bid targets beyond its current operations in Canada, the U.S., Kazakhstan and Australia, he said. "We've got the resources and the ability to move quickly," Gitzel said.
Gitzel's predecessor Grandey said in November 2009 that Cameco has been interested in Australian uranium miner Paladin Energy Ltd. and been challenged by its valuation.
"We have the same concern about valuation," Gitzel said in the interview. "We've got some other pieces and projects that we like better."

Analysten erwarten weitere Uranakquisitionen in Saskatchewan

InvestmentPitch: Dundee Capital Markets Analyst David Talbot Correctly Forecast Renewed $4.50 Bid by Cameco Corp for Hathor Explorations (TSX:HAT), and Reiterates Buy Recommendation for Fission Energy (TSXV:FIS)

Vancouver, British Columbia, November 14, 2011 - In a recent video interview with Tara Sweder of InvestmentPitch.com, Dundee Capital Markets analyst David Talbot forecast a renewed bid for Hathor Exploration (TSX:HAT) by Cameco Corp (TSX:COO) in the $4.50 to $4.60 range.

Talbot's forecast was right on the money as today Cameco, the world's largest uranium producer, raised its hostile offer for Canada's Hathor Exploration Ltd. to about $625 million to counter a competing bid from Rio Tinto Group (NYE:RIO). Hathor holders will receive $4.50 a share, 8.4 per cent more than Rio's Oct. 19 cash offer of $4.15.

Talbot believed Cameco could afford to bid higher and needed to keep control of the area. He further believes Rio Tinto may not be finished.

Talbot stated "Athabasca is one place in the world where companies can actually find high grade uranium. Rio Tinto is not new to the space but wants to get into the world's leading uranium environment."

When asked about Fission Energy (TSXV:FIS),Talbot stated that he believes Fission is "next on the block", but has not yet set a target price. In his opinion, the Hathor package is relatively small, whereas the trend along strike to the west that Fission owns is actually fairly big.
