Here is a note from my cousin I thought might be of interest to understand the relationship of natural gas and nitrogen production.
Natural Gas contains no nitrogen!!! It is principally CH4 and CH6.
The nitrogen is combined with the hydrogen in the natural gas to produce ammonium fertilizers or with sodium or calcium to produce sodium or calcium type fertilizers. It takes large amounts of electricity to produce nitrates. By the way, ammonium nitrate combined with diesel fuel was what the Oklahoma bomb was made of. It is also used routinely in mining as it produces a much “sharper” shock wave which fractures rock or coal. Normally it is detonated with dynamite – which is nitroglycerine soaked diatomaceous earth (Fuller’s earth).
During WWI, a nitrate plant along with Wilson Dam was built in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In 1933, when the TVA act was enacted, the nitrate plant and Wilson Dam became part of the TVA system.
The nitrate plant became TVA’s fertilizer research center and around 90 to 95% of the fertilizers in use today were developed at the center.
Tell Doris that the increase in the price of natural gas has hurt the fertilizer industry by increasing the production costs with no appreciable increase in the retail price of the fertilizer. Nitrogen is produced by liquefying air and then using a process called fractional distillation to remove the different gases. (They boil at different temperatures – assuming that pressure is held constant). Air is around 80% nitrogen.
Thought you might like to know.

Seems to be dropping beyond what might be expected. Any thoughts? I have:
Negs:
- Natural Gas prices rising
- Worldwide subsidies collapsing (ShortTerm)
- 2005 Natural Disasters
Pos:
- Worldwide subsidies collapsing (LongTerm)
- Operations downsized
- Continued Dividends

Hallo !
