NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 17, 2001--
Leading Consumer Goods Company in India Will Leverage iVillage Brand
to Provide Localized Content to Indian Women
iVillage Inc. (Nasdaq: IVIL, news, msgs), operator of iVillage.com: The Women`s
Network (http://www.ivillage.com and AOL keyword: ivillage), and Hindustan Lever
Limited (HLL), a Unilever subsidiary, today announced an exclusive licensing and
technology agreement to create a Web site targeting women in India. This agreement
combines the expertise of iVillage, the leader in reaching women online, with the
largest consumer products company in India.
The arrangement between HLL and iVillage will build upon the successful online
community model pioneered by iVillage in the U.S. The venture will bring together
iVillage`s award-winning content and online solutions to the women of India with HLL`s
knowledge of consumers and brand management to support the Indian site through online
and offline activities targeted to Indian women. HLL will build and operate the site.
The HLL agreement follows the beauty joint venture iVillage and Unilever formed in the
United States last February.
"This is another affirmation of Unilever`s confidence in the iVillage brand and its
effectiveness in reaching women online," said Doug McCormick, Chief Executive Officer
of iVillage. "Our agreement with HLL marks the second step in iVillage`s international
strategy, having successfully launched iVillage.co.uk, a joint venture with Tesco PLC
in the U.K. last year. HLL is present in nearly every urban household in India, and
given HLL`s strong equity among and deep understanding of Indian women, this agreement
effectively leverages the iVillage brand and assets in India, where Internet usage is
steadily on the rise. With our continued focus on profitability, this alliance
furthers our international presence and creates an additional revenue stream, without
increasing our expenditures."
"Increasingly more women overseas are turning to iVillage for interactive solutions to
help manage their lives," said Nancy Alpert, Senior Vice President, Corporate
Development, iVillage. "Following our successful venture to bring online solutions and
content to women in the U.K., we look forward to replicating that success working with
HLL to serve the growing online women`s population of India."
"Our relationship with iVillage continues to add value," said Clive Butler, Unilever
Corporate Development Director. "Together we are learning how to reach and communicate
with our consumers online and build relationships based on an understanding of their
needs. For HLL, the partnership with iVillage.com is timely given the projected growth
of online users in India."
Mr. D. Sundaram, HLL`s Finance Director who is responsible for the company`s e-
initiatives, said, "The adult urban women in India are a key target group of the
company. Of them, almost 40% are expected to be online in five years. We are creating
a powerful tool of connecting with them and providing them with their own space for
meeting their diverse personal and professional needs. This is one of the initiatives
in the company`s long-term strategy, as it unfolds over the years, of a click-and-
brick model, supplemented by a web-enabled supply chain, with the aim of reaching out
to millions of consumers and building strong and enduring relationships and best
serving the needs of Indian women as they come online."
Together, HLL and iVillage will provide information, advice, services and solutions
with the objective of becoming the destination Web site of choice among all Indian
women. The site will offer elements of iVillage.com including content, design and
layout and an array of customized interactive services. It is expected to have
multiple channels, including health, careers, relationships, parenting, beauty, food
and home, as well as provide an array of interactive customized services, including
tools, planners, quizzes, community boards and online chats. Certain content will be
localized to take into account the cultural background and regional needs of women in
India.
As part of the licensing agreement, HLL will pay an initial set-up fee for certain
services and domain knowledge and iVillage will receive an annual royalty on any
revenue generated. The agreement is subject to necessary regulatory approvals in
India. A dedicated and diverse team under HLL`s direction will be recruited from both
within and outside the company, which will operate out of Bombay. HLL will also
provide all capital investments required in maintaining the Web site including
technology, staffing and marketing support. The site is expected to launch in the
second half of 2001.

If you think investors are pummeling
portals like Yahoo (YHOO), AtHome
(ATHM) and Looksmart (LOOK) --
each of which now trade at one-fifth of
their 52-week high or less -- you
should see the beating they are dishing out to
demographically targeted, or so-called "vertical" portals.
Shares in iVillage (IVIL), a site for women, hit $27 in March
and closed at $1.88 Wednesday. Another female-oriented
site, Women.com (WOMN) traded for $15 a share in March
and closed Wednesday at 44 cents. Spanish-language portal
StarMedia (STRM) is considered lucky with its $3.94 share
price, up from a $1.50 52-week low last month, if down
precipitously from its February peak of $61.
Vertical portals are faring so poorly that many brokerage
houses have decided they`ll lose money just talking about
them.
"At these prices, analysts just can`t do it," says Katherine
Heany, an analyst at Bluestone Capital, one of only two
analysts actively covering the once-hot iVillage and
Women.com. "The institutions are not buying stock at this
level."
Tough times
The verticals are clearly struggling. Women.com, which
Media Metrix rates as the empress of the verticals with 8.4
million unique visitors last month, laid off 25 percent of its
staff in December, lost its esteemed editor in chief earlier this
month and had to close an e-commerce division earlier in the
year.
IVillage, the next-most-popular site with 6.7 million unique
users, lost its CEO in July after shuttering its iBaby
e-commerce unit and selling it to Babygear.com. Babygear
eventually filed for bankruptcy, rendering iVillage`s stake in
the company worthless. Before the year was out, iVillage was
downgraded by three investment banks.
Portals targeted at racial, ethnic and common-language
groups have also had a tough time. QuePasa.com, a
Spanish-language portal, liquidated in late December. About
one week earlier, another Spanish-language site, Yupi.com,
cut half its staff. Urban Box Office, an African-American
portal backed by Time Warner`s HBO , filed for bankruptcy
and laid off 300 workers in November. Even America
Online struggled, laying off executives this past summer
from its NetNoir, a community site and media portal for
African Americans.
Big payoffs?
So why should investors pay any attention to these
beaten-down media properties? The chance of a big payoff
down the road.
"The bulk of ad dollars are targeted at women, because they
are controlling 70 percent to 80 percent of the spending
dollars. If you want to target them, these are the sites. And
women are going there -- they`ve been going up in the
ratings," says Heany, who has a "neutral" rating on iVillage
and Women.com.
Indeed, Women.com and iVillage have gained steadily in
audience share, if not compared to other popular sites. In Dec.
1999, iVillage ranked as the 41st most trafficked site,
according to Media Metrix, with 4.5 million monthly unique
visitors. Women.com was 42nd, with 4.4 million visitors.
The sites now rank 43 and 29, respectively, with iVillage
gaining 49 percent more traffic and Women.com gaining 91
percent in 2000.
What`s more, Heany says vertical portals can often demand
higher CPM (cost per million) advertising rates, thanks to
their narrow demographics, which allows advertisers to target
their messages more effectively.
But for all their advantages, vertical portals have been slow
to show results. Building a media property takes time,
whether it`s on the Internet or offline. In the magazine world,
titles traditionally need several years before they turn a profit.
And television programming is a notoriously mercurial game,
with the vast majority of new shows ending up in the rubbish
bins.
Digital media executives are, in fact, fond of pointing out that
it took years -- sometimes decades -- to develop interesting
TV and radio programming and profitable networks,
particularly in the cable television era, when many channels
compete for the same audience.
It takes time
"It took five years for BET to go profitable," BET.com COO
Scott Mills said of the Black Entertainment Television cable
network. "If you took a pure-play magazine, it would take
four years to go profitable."
For its part, BET.com has grown steadily, making impressive
gains against its chief competitor, BlackPlanet. BlackPlanet
was the more popular site in October, with 610,000 monthly
unique users to BET.com`s 280,117. But in December BET
closed the gap, registering 572,000 unique users, Media
Metrix says, while BlackPlanet had fallen to 610,000.
Mills grew traffic partly by leveraging BET`s offline assets,
and the offline assets of media behemoth Viacom (VIA),
which acquired BET for $3 billion in November and which
owns networks like MTV, UPN and CBS. Viewers of a BET
music video show, for example, were asked to vote for their
favorite videos on BET.com. The site now receives 20,000 to
30,000 votes every day.
But not every demographic portal has been as quick to
exploit non-Internet media as BET. Women.com struggled
to effectively use the assets of Hearst Publishing, which
owns 46 percent of Women.com, last year, and headaches
related to integrating that content were said to have much to
do with the departure of Women.com`s editor. But the portal
plans to keep trying; it inked a cross-promotion deal this
month with Lifetime`s women`s TV network.
To add to the confusion, it is unclear when the vertical
portals will turn profitable. Heany says she expects
Women.com and iVillage to pass that milestone in the fourth
quarter of next year, but warns that much depends on
macroeconomic conditions. At the other end of the spectrum,
Mills says BET isn`t planning to make money for three and
half years, and he reserves the right to expand or contract
that deadline.
Best of the bunch
In the near term, two companies seem to be outperforming
the other verticals: Alloy (ALLOY) and StarMedia (STRM).
Alloy, a teen-oriented portal favored by Heany, had 1.2
million unique visitors in December. Half of the brokers
covering the company rate it as a "strong buy," the rest as a
"buy" -- despite the limited online purchasing ability of teen
consumers. Alloy shares closed Wednesday at $8.06, off
their 52-week high of $20, but quite a mild decline
compared to other online media properties.
StarMedia, a Spanish language site, has regained some of its
value in recent weeks thanks in large part to its focus on
Latin America and blue chip, non-dotcom client base, says
Lehman Brothers analyst Michael Simpson. Stateside, Latino
Web surfers tend to favor English-language portals,
Simpson says, while Latinos who do not speak English are
often not online in the first place. That trend probably had a
lot to do with the woes of Yupi and QuePasa, he adds.
"They tried to target U.S. Hispanics, and they are just not
interested in it right now," Simpson said.
Old Economy ad clients could also help iVillage weather the
ad downturn, Heany says, since Women.com has more
dotcom clients. IVillage`s founders came from old media, the
analyst explains, while Women.com`s came from a
technology background.
Maedels was tun (Indien, Radio,.. etc.).

RESEARCH ALERT - Goldman raises iVillage EPS view
NEW YORK, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs on Tuesday said it raised its earnings
estimate on iVillage Inc. , an online network for women, a day after the company
posted a narrower fourth-quarter loss.
Goldman raised its 2001 estimate on iVillage to a profit of 1 cent per share from a
prior forecast of a loss of 8 cents per share.
Analyst Tonia Pankopf rates the stock a "market outperformer," Goldman said.
On Monday, iVillage reported a fourth-quarter loss from continuing operations of 33
cents per share versus a loss of 91 cents per share in the same period a year ago. The
company also said it would buy rival Women.com Networks Inc. to boost its position in
the sector.
IVillage shares closed Monday at $1-23/32, off a year high of $27-5/16 and near a low of 5/8.

(Nasdaq: IVIL), operator of the iVillage Network, which includes iVillage.com, Lamaze Publishing and the Newborn Channel, and Bridgestone/ Firestone, Inc., today announced that they have entered into a sponsorship agreement for June 2001, National Safety Month. iVillage also announced the creation of Interquizzals, a new medium designed to enhance sponsors` reach to their target audiences. Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc., is the first customer for this new iVillage service.
Under the sponsorship agreement, Bridgestone/Firestone and TireSafety.com will sponsor a tire safety section on iVillage.com located at www.ivillage.com/tiresafety, which will include key information on proper tire maintenance and important safety tips. In addition, an online interactive quiz, located at www.ivillage.com/carseatquiz, will test adults` knowledge of car seats and is designed to help in understanding their proper use.
"iVillage is pleased to join with Bridgestone/Firestone as we continue to provide women with important safety information," said John M. Barbera, President, Sales and Sales Marketing at iVillage. "We believe our joint collaboration on the tire and car safety quizzes will have a positive impact on women`s approach to buying car-related products."
"Checking your air pressure monthly can help you avoid dangerous tire conditions and save money. Because tire safety is a crucial part of auto safety, Bridgestone/Firestone is excited about the opportunity to work with iVillage.com during National Safety Month and contribute to their extensive collection of safety information," said Michael Fluck, E-Business & Internet Manager at Bridgestone/Firestone. "We are looking forward to reaching the online female audience through our partnership with iVillage.com and hope that our campaign will drive many people to TireSafety.com where they can benefit from free monthly email reminders to check their tires` air pressure."
The new iVillage Interquizzal service offering provides quiz sponsors with an additional way to extend their brand and reach their target audience. While results are being calculated for the online quizzes, a large pop-up window with a sponsor`s message/advertisement is displayed on screen. The window closes automatically when the quiz results are finalized. The Interquizzal sponsorship system is now available to run on all iVillage quizzes and other interactive applications.
"We continue to seek ways to help sponsors more effectively reach their intended demographic, and believe that our new `Interquizzal` offering is yet another example of our commitment to advertisers," Barbera added.
In addition to the Interquizzal, pop-up and banner advertisements as well as text tag lines directing iVillage visitors to Bridgestone/Firestone`s tire safety Web site, TireSafety.com, will run on a rotational basis on the iVillage Network. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
iVillage: Erneuter Stellenabbau
