Ucom aims to revive troubled WorldPage
      Suphaphan Plengmaneepun

United Communication Industry Plc (Ucom) has aborted an informal agreement to sell its unprofitable paging business to Bliss-Tel and is determined to revive the business with a professional team.
No clear reason was given but a source said the informal deal had been struck at the time when Poosana Premanoch and his associates were in control of the company.
After Mr Poosana`s group was ousted by Boonchai Bencharongkul, Ucom decided it could revive WorldPage Co with the financial backing from its new strategic partner, Telenor of Norway.
Bliss-Tel is 24% owned by Samart Corp, and 20% by US-based AudioVox. It markets mobile phone handsets for Digital Phone Co, acquired earlier this year by Shin Corporations.
Total Access Communication, the cellular arm of Ucom, signed an agreement to sell 51% of WorldPage to Bliss-Tel late last year, but a price could not be settled. TAC owns 80% of WorldPage and Hong Kong`s Star Page has 20%.
The source said that under Mr Poosana, TAC saw WorldPage as a financially troubled operation whose revival hinged on huge investment. A sale was seen as the solution, but Mr Boonchai wanted to retain the business.
TAC has recruited Visit Khunnirundorn, from Shin`s Advanced Paging, as managing director of WorldPage. Mr Visit declined to comment, saying only that a change was imminent.

      Seoul stocks hit by profit-taking

Ending a six-day winning streak, share prices on the Seoul stock exchange turned lower yesterday on profit-taking following recent sharp gains, analysts said.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index, or Kospi, retreated 16.68 points, or 2.0 percent, to 818.53.
Volume was heavy at 436.3 million shares valued at 3.25 trillion won. Decliners led gainers 525 to 300 with 59 stock ending unchanged.
A total of 34 shares soared by the daily limit of 15 percent, while four went limit down.
"Opening higher on gains on Wall Street and the regained stability in the local financial markets, the index once climbed over 840," said analyst at Daishin Securities Co. "But profit-taking set in quickly to bring the index down."
Foreign investors went on a shopping spree, purchasing shares worth a net 137.1 billion won, while local institutions dumped their holdings at a net 151.8 billion won. Individual investors were net buyers at 4.5 billion won.
Insurance shares rallied on news of a hike in auto insurance premium, with many of them ending limit up.
In contrast, bank issues were generally lower on concerns over the announced strike by bank unionists.
Hanvit Bank was the most heavily-traded stock, down 335 won on volume of 516.2 million shares.
Most index-linked key issues also ended lower to drive down the index.
Meanwhile, the technology-heavy Kosdaq index turned lower amid a lack of market-moving shares, losing 2.86 points, or 1.85 percent, to finish at 151.68.
