If only Autobytel (ABTL:Nasdaq - commentary - research) had changed its name to FindAutobytel. Or even SearchAutobytel. Or maybe ObtainAutobytel. I think the stock would be up 20% and not down 20% from that last quarter.

People not familiar with Autobytel ought to take a look at it because the stock`s been totally pounded down a quick 4 points as it reported a couple of cents of shortfall. I can`t figure out whether people sold it because management was so cavalier about the miss -- totally ignoring it -- on the conference call, or because the stock was just up so darned much that it didn`t matter what the company reported. There`s no doubt that estimates got ahead of themselves, but this business is a little business, and little businesses, honest little businesses like this one, can be lumpy.


I want to give its CEO Jeffrey Schwartz the benefit of the doubt. When the stock was at $6, he sat in my office and traced out a scenario where the stock could double. And it went and did that and more. The company had a slight miss on the revenue per lead, which is the metric that this business allegedly lives and dies by. I say allegedly because in the end, Autobytel can own the online car market, of which there is growing evidence in the channel.
