      Es wird immer besser...
Hier das heutige Fazit des EU-Kommissars Dombrovskis, der gestern NANO besuchte... Schaut Euch mal den Satz unten in Fett und Rot an!

      SPEECH
      2 December 2022
Remarks by Executive Vice-President Dombrovskis at CETA Joint Committee Meeting (Ottawa, Canada)
Minister Ng, Dear Mary, thank you for welcoming us to Ottawa. I am very happy that we finally have the opportunity to hold a CETA Joint Committee in person.

2022 is drawing to a close, so this is a very good moment to take stock. I must say that January seems like a very long time ago! Back then, we had reasons for cautious optimism. We were slowly returning to normality, following the pandemic and successful vaccine roll-out.

Instead, since the launch of Russia’s cruel aggression against Ukraine in February, we have lived through a year of geopolitical crisis. War has returned to Europe, and the global repercussions continue to be severe.

This is a barbaric attack on a sovereign European democracy – but also, in a wider sense, an attack on the global rules-based community as a whole.

Faced with this existential challenge, the collaboration and solidarity between the EU and our allies has been truly remarkable. So, let me use this moment to formally thank Canada for your immense contribution. They say a friend in need is a friend indeed, and Canada has proven itself as a true friend in these difficult times.

From a global trade perspective, the past three years have highlighted that international crises – be it a pandemic or a war – can have immediate and profound impacts on our economies, supply chains and trade relationships.

Against this background, it is clear that the value of trading relationships based on trust, rules and shared values has risen very substantially. The EU and Canada were already close allies and like-minded partners. Now, we have every interest to develop our relationship to its full potential.

We are allies in the global fight against climate change. Joint supporters of rules-based trade and the multilateral trading system. And the good news is that we have capacity to do so much more, in areas like raw materials, environmental protection, sustainability, ocean management, plastics pollution, and consumer protection to name but a few.

CETA is the central pillar of this relationship. And it is the platform for developing our relationship to its full potential. This year we celebrate CETA’s 5th anniversary, since provisional entry into force in 2017.

So on behalf of the EU, let me wish this trade agreement a very happy birthday. And let me recall that we are making good progress in the EU towards full ratification.

Just yesterday, the German Bundestag gave its full endorsement to CETA. This is a hugely important milestone, as Germany is Europe’s biggest economy.

This shows that our European approach, while it may be gradual, is correct. Democratic discourse, transparency and engagement with all stakeholders is essential to the success of trade agreements. This is the right way to bring our citizens along with us.

Every full ratification in an EU Member State is a recognition that CETA is delivering real world benefits to our economies, companies and citizens. It shows that comprehensive and progressive trade agreements deliver.

The facts and figures are beyond dispute. CETA is a success for both sides:

Bilateral trade has increased by more than one third since 2017.
Trade in goods reached an all-time high of €60.7 billion in 2021.
Bilateral trade in services has increased by 11%, reaching €28.4 billion in 2021.
So we can celebrate these remarkable achievements. And we should communicate them, clearly and consistently, to our citizens.

Because CETA is not just an economic success story. It has massive potential to help drive green and just economic growth for both the EU and Canada.

It is one of the greenest, most inclusive and most sustainable trade deals ever signed. Now, we should look at concrete ways to develop our shared commitment to tackling climate change and managing the green transition in a mutually beneficial manner.

Already, bilateral trade in environmental goods is up by 27% in 2021, from 4.6 to 5.9 billion Euro.

CETA is also the backbone for our shared commitment to building sustainable value chains and stronger supply chain resilience. I see strong opportunities to cooperate even more in areas like energy security, green technologies, and raw materials.

In this respect, our Strategic Partnership on Raw Materials, which we signed in July 2021 can be transformative. It can help us to jointly build secure, sustainable and resilient value chains for critical raw materials.

Indeed, our visit to the Nano One facility yesterday showed what we can achieve in the field of new, clean technologies, working together under CETA[/red].

I will not go into more details of these joint achievements, and I am looking forward to hearing more from our Chief Economists and from our teams.

To conclude, let me repeat that today’s meeting is a great opportunity to look at CETA’s achievements to date, and reaffirm our commitment to exploiting the full potential of this fantastic, modern trade deal.

Das steht sogar auf der Website der EU:

Executive Vice-President Dombrovskis visits Canada to deepen EU-Canada relation and develop potential of CETA

Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President and Commissioner for Trade, is travelling to Canada today to meet his counterparts and discuss the transatlantic relations, support for Ukraine and the implementation of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

Today, the Executive-Vice President will meet the Canadian trade minister Mary Ng at Nano One, a tech company. Later, the EVP will meet Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. On Friday, Executive-Vice President Dombrovskis will participate in the CETA Joint Committee together with Minister Ng. The ministers will discuss ways to deepen future cooperation under CETA, notably exploring how to cooperate even more in areas like energy security, green technologies, and raw materials. The Executive-Vice President will also meet Canadian and EU business associations. Executive-Vice President Dombrovskis and Minister Ng will have bilateral meeting followed by a press conference at 14:30ET (20:30 CET).

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the provisional application of CETA, the backbone of the EU-Canada political, trade and economic partnership. Under CETA, bilateral trade has increased by more than one third.

      https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/video/volkswagen-closer-to-annou…
