Tata Steel steigt bei New Millenium Capital Corp. ein. Und sichert sich umfangreiche weitere Optionen.
Das merkwürdige nur, die Meldung ist in Asien seit gestern, kurz nach 15:00 Uhr über die Ticker gegangen. In Kanada war die Aktie bis 20:30 ausgesetzt, wurde dann wieder gehandelt. Es gab aber bis dato KEINE Meldung. Weder auf SEDAR, noch auf der Homepage, noch auf irgendeiner der einschlägigen Nordamerikanischen Info-Seiten.

Ich habe mal ein bisschen recherchiert. Die allgemeinen Voraussagen von Analysten für die künftige Preisentwicklung sind wenig hilfreich. Die Preisvoraussagen liefen der realen Entwicklung immer hinterher. Wurden vor neun Monaten noch Preise für 2009 von $ 1.800-2.200/Unze voraus gesagt, hat man vor ein paar Wochen die Preisprognosen auf etwa $ 1.200-1.300 herunter geschraubt. Jetzt, wo der Preis bei etwa $ 1.000 ist, wird sogar ein weiteres Absinken für möglich gehalten.
Begründet wird das durch eine geringere Nachfrage (geringere Autoproduktion, weniger Nachfrage bei der Schmuckindustrie) und einem gestiegenen Angebot. Die PGM-Produzenten in Südafrika haben die Ausfälle im Stromnetz durch eigene Diesel-Generatoren kompensiert und konnten die Produktion erhöhen. Allerdings treibt das auch die Produktionskosten in die Höhe und bei Preisen unter $ 1.000/Unze könnte es aufgrund mangelnder Wirtschaftlichkeit zu einer Reduzierung der Produktion kommen, was wiederum das Angebot beschneidet und den Platin-Preis anheben würde.
Laut einer am 01.10.08 gemachten Aussage von Barry Sergeant ist bereits jetzt die Hälfte der Produktion in Südafrika unprofitabel („It is also no secret that PGM metal prices have haemorrhaged of late; analysts estimate that at least half of southern Africa's PGM production is currently unprofitable.”)
Xstrata verschiebt die Übernahme von Lonmin wegen der niedrigen PGM-Preise.
Zurzeit halte ich es für das Beste, die weitere Preisentwicklung zu beobachten. Der Chart zeigt noch keine Bodenbildung und ein Durchrutschen in Richtung $ 900 ist nicht auszuschließen. Ich möchte nicht den Fehler machen, zu früh in ein Hebelzertifikat zu investieren.

Aber steckt nicht genau darin das Potenzial, wenn der Platinpreis wieder anzieht?

Optimism Over Platinum Metals Despite Price Drop

Demand for nickel and platinum group metals would be underpinned by the steel and engine catalyst sectors, but com modity markets would remain challeng ed in the coming year, Braemore Resources chairman David Humann said yesterday.

JOHANNESBURG (Business Day) -- raemore, which took a secondary listing on the JSE two months ago, is testing technology to treat tailings containing nickel at Leinster in Australia and scaling up its test plant to treat platinum group metals in South Africa. The shares, which made their debut in South Africa at about 90c, have traded as high as 120c and as low as 40c on small volumes.
Nickel dropped $300 to $16,700/ton on the London Metal Exchange yesterday, as analysts quoted by Reuters predicted the market would remain in surplus to 2011, and that prices could fall as low as $13,228/ton next year.
Platinum group metals prices tracked gold weaker in a response to the U.S. government’s market bail-out package, with platinum trading at $1,017/oz and palladium shedding over 1% to $218/oz.
But Humann said China and India continued to need steel to build infrastructure, and nickel would also be needed. Although fears that a U.S. recession would affect the automotive sector had hit the platinum price, new uses for the metal in electronics, especially cellphone technology, would sustain global demand.
